Tree - Selected folder always at top

Post by VeeGee »

Good afternoon all,
Is there a setting that will always put the selected folder (from a pane) at the top of the tree (full tree, not mini) ? If I have a folder selected and the next folder that I select is "above" it in the tree, it is putting that newly selected folder at the top of the tree. If the newly selected folder is "below" the selected folder in the tree, it just highlights it and doesn't move it to the top.

I am looking at this option because of a workaround I am using for a specific context menu. I don't want to use CEA_ListRightClickOnWhite=1, so I just right-click the folder in the tree to get the menu I need (a TortoiseSVN one). With the selected folder jumping up and down, takes my old eyes a minute to find it :veryconfused: .

I was thinking it would be great if an option allowed the selected folder to always be at the top, then I only have to "look" in one spot, every time. I looked through the configuration section, the INI tweaks and a forum search and didn't find anything (possible my search-fu is weak).

Personally I don't really understand what you mean with folders jumping etc, so forgive me if this is of no help, but one suggestion I have to avoid you having to locate the item you want in the tree is to instead right click the icon in the address bar and then select Shell Context Menu from there, that way the tree "jumping around" is irrelevant.

And you can enable Tools | Customize Tree | Tree Path Tracing as a visual guide to the current node.

Thank you all for the replies. I am using the Tree Path Tracing - WONDERFUL option !

I put together a few pictures and hopefully that will help explain.

Here is my bottom pane with a few tabs. The first tab is C:\Repository and the other tabs are sub folders underneath it :

When I select the Repository tab, it is highlighted and at the top of the tree :

When I select any tab that is "under" it in the path, they are properly selected and highlighted :

What I was hoping for was an option that would display the selected folder/tab location at the top of the tree, for example :

Occasionally I need to use the SVN Update and/or SVN Commit context menu. This only displays when I right-click on the Tree (which is fine) and I'd prefer to not use the CEA_ListRightClickOnWhite tweak. All the other context commands are present in the file list. Since I get to these by the right-clicking the tree folder, I thought an option to "move" it to the top would be easy to navigate to, since I would always be "looking" at the top of the tree.

As I navigate through all my tabs, you can see where the tree would jump around. Having the option to always have the selected tab location displayed at the top would be great (even when not using the context menu).

Thank you for your consideration.

I know it's not exactly what you want but I think accessing the shell context menu via my earlier suggestion it should contain the extra items you require, and it would always be in the same spot, alternatively if it doesn't then if you temporarily locked your tree it may also help if you expand the items you are going to be working on first, then there shouldn't be any jumping.

@ jupe, thank you. That is a great idea. Took me a few tries to find where you were clicking, but now I have it ! Never occurred to me to click there.

There are seriously tons of features built into XY. Such an impressive product.

I thought from your last reply you hadn't caught onto what I was trying to suggest, hence the screenshot, glad it helped.

In the meantime I played with an "Selected folder always at top" option and it's not that bad. I can imagine that some folks could use that.

I'll probably add a tweak to let you play, too.

But here it's about the tree. You are talking about the list, right?

Thank you for adding this tweak ! I just tried it out and it is working perfectly so far :appl: The majority of my folders pop right to the top when I click them in the pane. The ones that are near the bottom function as before and as expected (since they can't move up anyway).

You're on a roll, lots of really nice and useful tweaks and features getting added ! Thank you for your hard work.

I'm not sure if I will use it but I find it really likable.

I think I will add it to this section:
Configuration | General | Menus, Mouse, Safety | Usability
- Usability is a wide enough notion to cover it (and almost everything else ;)).
- And there is the Scroll margin feature as well, and both are connected.
- And there is enough space (contrary to Configuration | General | Tree and List | Tree).
