Right now I have no time to test: does this only concern the top folder's date or also any subfolders that are copied along?

The whole directory tree, and all files as well.
If I move files using Explorer they'll keep their creation dates, even across partitions, but not if I copy them. Folders only retain theirs when being moved within the same partition, when moved to another partition or copied anywhere, the timestamps are reset.

Ok. Just like Explorer I use the shell to copy files so these things are expected, it's no good idea to change them.

What I could do is alter my "Backup" function: it's also copying files but bypassing the shell, with much more control for me. Currently the results are the same (mod dates are set to Now), but I could change this. --- Right now my mind is somewhere else, and this needs some care... but spontaneously I'd say it would be a good idea for a backup function to keep the original dates, right!?

I agree, I think the default should be changing the dates just like Explorer does, but it would be great if there was a feature somewhere that allowed users to change that behaviour if they see fit. Doing it through the backup function sounds about right.

I just had a flow and did it. :)

So the backup function now does what a backup should do: preserve all original dates of all files and folders copied! :D

And you, Cynic, can use this function for your tasks. (But note: backup does not overwrite newer files of the same name that might already exist in the target --- so there's still a hole in the system: you currently cannot overwrite newer items AND keep the original date.)

:? I may be having another "pre-senior moment", but are we talking about the "Edit/Backup to" function here? Because I just used that with 6.30.20 to copy a file to another folder on same drive, and the copy had Modif date same as original, but its Created date was set to "now"...what obvious thing am I missing here?

Addendum/Update: Just tried it with a folder containing two files...the folder kept both original create/modif dates, but the files themselves only carried forward the original modif dates, with create being now.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

It was neither a pre- nor a post-senior moment: you are right, I just "forgot" the files' created date (because I erroneously thought that only the folders had this problem...).

Wow, that sure was fast!

Yes, I've done a few tests and the only problem seems to be the files' creation dates, as you've already noticed. Hopefully that shouldn't be too hard too fix.

Just an example of how quickly problems can get resolved here! :)
That's why we just adore the work that Don does...now do you see why, if you didn't already?

Indeed, I had already heard very good things about XYplorer's fast and continuous development, but I never thought it would be this fast. Impressive.
