store preview images to seperate folders + db's

hi,
i wonder if any of those--more professional (photographer/graph.designer)--options were thought of...
not even adobe bridge is useful for that. it puts automatically all previews to appdata somewhere..., ... messes up the c: drive. sometimes it crashes and is unable to load these previews again. that's really annoying.
not talking about windows explorer...
long time ago there was thumbsplus, a really great file- & image-file explorer, where one could generate thumbnail files to separate databases, which than could be stored on the matching external backup harddrives and loaded if needed...

XY keeps the thumbnail files in one place (and you can either let them reside in the default XY data folder
or configure your own). Symlinking them would probably be an option here but there is no automatism
to do that...

Just a thought...lately more and more users are asking about thumbnail databases like the capability of extracting the thumbnail images from the thumbnail database since they've lost the images files viewtopic.php?f=3&t=17880&hilit=rethumb and now this question on image file thumbnail database segregation. Would it be a nice XY feature to have the capability of viewing the thumbnail database independent of the actual image files being available? Let's say the images/image folders are being kept on an external drive and are not available for whatever reason or someone lost or deleted image files or whole folders of images. Or, possibly you are traveling and you'd like to see the your image thumbnails, but the images themselves are back at home.

You recently came up with SC rethumb which allows extraction of thumbnail images from a DB. Would it be possible when the image folders are not available, the user would press a toolbar button which would then direct thumbnail viewing to the thumbnail database folder itself. It wouldn't have to be anything really fancy, but the user could press a key to step through the thumbnail database files (dat2/dbits combo). The display would look pretty much like it does now viewing thumbnails but of course you would not have the capability for MDBU.

What do you think? It might make for a nice feature for photographers as well as other users.

@highend, we should get SC rethumb added to the listing of undocumented script commands. SC Unthumb is there but not the newer rethumb.

Don, the alignment of the extension in the category section of Previewed Formats is off a bit.

I know you were concerned about users understanding how this Previewed Formats and extension boxes work. Maybe in addition to your change, which does help by the way, you could also state above the Category box adjacent to word Categories, "select" or "select category to add and remove file extensions". Believe it or not, I think it was the fact that people didn't immediately 'see' that they were suppose to do that. Once they do that (select), they can see the lower box change to the selected category.

Read thumbs without the original files, yes, I like that and it could be done. But I'm not sure yet about the use of it and who would actually use it. Why is this cool?

For instance, in Lightroom these are called Smart Previews which are proxies for raw files. In the absence of the raw files (drive, cloud unavailable) you can just do your manipulations on them (they get automatically applied to the original files once they're available again).

I do think the feature would be an enticement or selling point for photographers and others (i.e., being able to view photo thumbnails while traveling, on the road, or out on a job where they don't have their full library actual photos).

Well, maybe. The thing would be quite an effort, and could become a can of worms. Needs some meditation time...
