The Find Files tooltips seem fine.
I've noticed it on tooltips for:
Tabs (showing the path)
Status bar (showing the same text as the bar itself)
Just noticed it on the buttons for adjusting dates & times in the info pane. Not on the textfield but on the Apply/Cancel buttons.
I'll keep my eyes open for anywhere else it might be happening.

Looks chaotic. You know, this is a VB bug, and it seems to be a weirder one than I had thought...TheQwerty wrote:The Find Files tooltips seem fine.

I should look at this when I have 2 monitors myself. What kind of additional hardware do I need for this (I can borrow a 2nd monitor): a monitor hub or so?

If your current video card doesn't have two outputs you'll need a second one. It's been a while since I've looked for a cheap card, but I've been able to find older ones that fit the bill just fine for $20USD. Got any used computer parts stores nearby?admin wrote:I should look at this when I have 2 monitors myself. That's why I asked if they could even be fixed in the first place. I was hoping it was more of a case of you had found a fix, implemented it, but missed out on a few places that needed updated.admin wrote:Looks chaotic. You know, this is a VB bug...
I've gone through a whole bunch of the dialogs (anything to avoid doing actual work) and found some more of these disobedient tooltips. Maybe they can help in finding a pattern.
The actual date/time values when not in editing mode on the Info Pane->Properties tab.
The DOS name/type/location values on the Info Pane->Properties tab.
The file version values on the Info Pane->Version Tab
The binary file value when "Showing Info & Options" on the Info
Pane->Preview or Raw View Tabs
The Mode label on the Info Pane->Find Files->Name & Location tab.
The "Name match fuzziness" label on the Info Pane->Find Files->Options tab.
The sample fields on the Configuration->Colors tab.
The "Application loaded in ...." text on the Configuration->Report tab.
The "Press new shortcut:" text on the Customize Keyboard Shortcuts dialog.
The hyperlink to/back from other commands when a shortcut is already in use on the Customize Keyboard Shortcuts dialog.

I bought a new computer last week... it's still unpacked so I cannot look at it. Comes with a "Geforce 6100 Shared" -- has it 2 outputs? (Sorry, I'm between typing and cooking right now...)lukescammell wrote:All graphics cards released in the last 5 years come with two outputs... just pick up the cheapest POS that you can find

Well, the "shared" tells me it's probably an integrated chipset -- meaning the video chip is soldered onto the motherboard. Looking at NVidia's website (http://www.nvidia.com/page/nb_6100-430go_features.html), there's the NVIDIA® nView® Multi-Display Technology feature. IF that's what's in your computer, then it looks like it's dual-monitor capable out of the box.admin wrote:I bought a new computer last week... it's still unpacked so I cannot look at it. The problem that I've run into recently is that some (don't know what proportion, but for me it was 2 out 3) of these cards is that their DVI connector is a DVI-D port, which means it cannot be connected to an analog VGA monitor - you have to have a digital monitor on it (even the DVI-DB15 adapters won't help).lukescammell wrote:All graphics cards released in the last 5 years come with two outputs... just pick up the cheapest POS that you can find
If you do not have a digital monitor, then you need to get a card that has a DVI-I port, which lets you hook up an analog monitor to it using the adapter.
An alternative is to drop in a cheap PCI video card, but even this does not alway work.
An inexpensive PCI-Express video card I've purchased recently that works fine with 2 analog VGA monitors is http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a ... 6814125056

just a different direction of thought: it might be just that you do some consistency checks in some place that affects this. For example the screen coordinates can become negative with dual monitors. So if you check for that in some place and correct it, that might already be it.
about connecting a second monitor: cards often have DVI-Outputs these days, but I've never had or seen a card in recent years (let alone a new one) that can't supply a second monitor. You probably will need a DVI-Analog adapter for a few bucks (if none or too few came with the card) but that should be it.
bye

Thanks for the info. I'll keep you updated once I find the time to unpack my computer.
In the meantime I rewrote the tabs tooltips... they'll have a shadow now, but did it fix the DM issue? Who knows? You'll know! You'll tell me...

Never had a problem myself... but then I'm pretty sure I have two different DVI-VGA convertors, since they don't all work on all cards...mwb1100 wrote:The problem that I've run into recently is that some (don't know what proportion, but for me it was 2 out 3) of these cards is that their DVI connector is a DVI-D port, which means it cannot be connected to an analog VGA monitor - you have to have a digital monitor on it (even the DVI-DB15 adapters won't help).lukescammell wrote:All graphics cards released in the last 5 years come with two outputs... just pick up the cheapest POS that you can find
Regarding the integrated graphics in your new PC Don, it *can* support two monitors, whether or nt it *did* depends on the motherboard manufacturer. Look at the back of your case, are there two outputs? If so, then you can probably hook up a 2nd monitor
