slow renaming of folders on Win10

Post by rudek »

I have Win10-64 1607 14393.1066 and XYplorer 17.80. The following issue has been happening in all recent XYplorer versions and Win10 versions:

If you make a new folder and rename it, or just rename an existing folder, it can take 20-120 secs to rename. The case is true when:
- XYplorer is running and you try to rename a folder in XYplorer (XYplorer is not accessible during the wait time)
- XYplorer is running and you try to rename a folder in Windows Explorer (XYplorer is not accessible and Win Explorer is "not responding" during the wait time)
The issue does not occur when XYplorer is not running and you try to rename a folder in Windows Explorer. I have no Shell context menus set.

I hope this can be solved as it is very annoying...

Put XYplorer.exe and XYcopy.exe in the whitelist of your antivirus solution.

Report back if the issue is gone after doing this

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, it did not help. Waiting for more ideas...

Sounds extreme. Can anybody on Win10 confirm this?

Making a new folder or renaming an exiting one is instant for me using Windows 10 x64 Pro. Also, no delays renaming in Windows Explorer with XY running in the background.

Same here, no delays whatsoever.

Thanks for your contributions. Obviously, this is a strange issue. I am sure it is caused by something other than XYplorer, but the fact that with XYplorer stopped there is no issue points to some circumstance that XYPlorer is contributing to. Any other ideas?

List all software that has anything to do with security / sandboxing (antivirus or any other realtime scanning engines (e.g. malwarebytes))
that runs on your pc. File / folder watching and / or hiding software as well.

I basically use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes premium. I first added xyplorer.exe and xycopy.exe to both their exclusion lists - no change. Then I temporarily disabled both programs, still no change. It looks like these two protection programs have no influence. Only when I close XYplorer file renaming is instantaneous in Windows Explorer.

I have no Shell context menus set
What does that mean?
The XY setting or in general no software that adds a context menu entry?

Does the issue only appear when you used a context menu click
to rename / create a folder? Or e.g. in Windows Explorer (which XY is running):
CTRL + SHIFT + N
Do both applications hang when you use this keyboard shortcut?

Additional info: I found a cause for the folder renaming issue: If you disable windows search indexer, everything works.

> Temporary Workaround:
I disabled the Windows Search service, and the problem stopped happening:
1. Run: services.msc
2. Open the service: Windows Search
3. Startup type: Disabled

Obviously, Win10 without search is pretty lame, so I reenabled search indexing and the problem reappeared. So now the question is, in what way is XYplorer interacting with the search indexer when a file is renamed in windows Explorer....

@highend:

-> XYplorer is not added to shell context

Does the issue only appear when you used a context menu click to rename / create a folder? Or e.g. in Windows Explorer (which XY is running):
CTRL + SHIFT + N
-> issue happens when using F2, or clicking on a folder name to rename it or when using rename from context menu. It does not happen if you create a new folder without renaming it next.

Do both applications hang when you use this keyboard shortcut?
-> yes, both applications hang, but not when using CTRL + SHIFT + N. They hang when using f2/click/using rename from context menu

Aha, that's it!

But strange that Explorer gets slow when XY is open. (Really??)

What if you turn off Auto-Refresh in XY?

I tried disabling autorefresh in XYP. Result is even weirder:
1. with XYP autorefresh off; Windows Explorer folder rename is normal, XYP folder rename is fast when I create a new folder and immediately rename before saving it
2. with XYP autorefresh off; XYP folder rename is slow when I now try to rename that already renamed folder and save it
3. with XYP autorefresh off; If I now rename the same folder in Windows Explorer, the next rename in XYP is normal, but the next rename of the same folder in XYP is again slow. It works cyclically.

Unfortunately, case 2. is by far the most frequently used. I basically work in XYP 100% of the time, and normally never use Windows Explorer, except now for these tests.

This is not normal. Do you have any 3rd party software running that watches the file system?

Nothing comes to mind. I use Defender and Malwarebytes for protection. I did use Kaspersky until about 3 months ago but I had completely removed it. Apart from that, there should be nothing else. What 3rd party software did you have in mind, as a hint?

I did try completely uninstalling XYPlorer and reinstalling it, no difference there. Except now I can not drag and drop files from and to XPlorer from/to Desktop. Drag and drop works fine from/to any other folder just not from Desktop. Totally weird.
