sophisticated move, copy, recycle bin behaviour

Post by xyply »

Currently I am using idoswinpro as an explorer enhancement.
It is in German only and not developed anymore but it has some very sophisticated features I am missing in many other explorers.
XYplorer could well be its successor but I cannot find some settings I like very much in idoswinpro.

I want to have left click drag and drop behave the same no matter if I am on a local drive or between drives.
This way I don't need to think in M$ magical terms what the result will be.
A left click drag and drop is ALWAYS a move and if I want a copy I have to do some extra action like holding down shift or ctrl.

On the recycle bin on the other hand I want some sophisticated "magic" which M$ did forget to implement.
I don't want to be bothered with any confirmation if something can be restored from the recycle bin.
That is the main reason for a recycle bin that I can go there and get items back from it. So there is no need to ask for confirmation.
BUT: if something really gets deleted either because I am on a network drive or the item is to big for the recycle bin then of course I want to get asked for confirmation.
So if I am asked for confirmation I know that this request is important and I don't get into the habit of quickly clicking OK like the M$ mechanism trains me.

You can configure this under Tools > Configuration... > Other > Shell Integration > Drag and Drop

I believe that the developer, Don/admin, would agree that this would be a good feature. However, he has also said that Microsoft has not made it possible to determine when the recycle bin will actually be used nor has he found a reliable workaround.

Thanks a lot for pointing me to the setting for the 1st point.
On the 2nd point IdoswinPro (http://www.idoswin.de/) can do exactly that.
It has a setting in the Options (F12) at the "Allgemein" Tab.
In the block "Bestätigen" there are two check boxes.
The 1st reads "Verschieben in den Papierkorb bestätigen" which means "Confirm delete to recycle bin" and I untick that.
The 2nd reads "Löschen bestätigen" which means "Delete confirmation" and I tick that.
Then I get the desired behaviour that I only get asked if something really gets deleted.

I don't question that those options exist in the other program, but without testing I cannot say with certainty that they worked reliably.

This behavior has been explored before and was briefly added before the discovery of glaring and dangerous flaws, which have yet to be resolved.

| see that xyplorer is now not free anymore and the price is not a bargain.
It has a wealth of nice features though so I am considering of buying a license if only the delete ergonomics were less click prone.
I want 2 buttons for delete.
One button should delete to the recycle bin and only ask for confirmation if storing to the recycle bin would not be successful.
Thus in 99% of the time I would not be bothered by extra clicks and know I have a safety net.
The 2nd button should really delete and thus always come up with a confirmation dialog.
This way I know that whenever a dialog appears I have to carefully look at it as something is going to be really deleted.
And whenever there is no dialog then I am safe.
This is a clear 2 way learning and I don't get trained to clicking on dialog boxes in mostly harmless as but sometimes harmful cases.

Since there is already the option Suppress delete confirmation dialog (Configuration → File Operations → File Operations → Miscellaneous), half of the work is already done. There should be an easy way to detect if the user hits "Suppr" or "Shit"+"Suppr" to know if the file is being deleted to the Recycle Bin or not.

@Leito
The difference is that a regular delete from a local drive results in the object being put to the recycle bin.
For this, a delete confirmation is an annoying extra step because you can get an object back from the bin until you clear the recycle bin.
It also trains the user wrongly.
If you delete a file from a network share (e.g. home NAS) there normally is no recycle bin and the file would really be deleted.
In this (and only in this) case a delete confirmation should appear.
This way you know: if a delete confirmation appears you need to pay attention to it.
This is in contrast to the Microsoft philosophy which issues warning for many things which are approved in most of the cases.
The result is that you get trained to click OK. Thus it happens more easily that something really get deleted by accident.

You are right, I didn't think about network drives and floppy disks.

So would it be possible to script this "smart" behaviour with XYplorer?
I think it could be a real benefit.
