Yes, on the other hand but I find it rather unlikely that you start a rename job and then bail out. Rather you work on your pattern until you get it right. Or?j_c_hallgren wrote:Three buttons would be a simpler coding change and still would allow users to easily decide the equivalant of "Back","Next","Exit" and would allow a quick bail-out if desired (which a subset panel would not!)admin wrote:So, I'm undecided. I'm willing to go back to my first version with three buttons
Edit Pattern | Rename Now (default) | Cancel
but I would like some more opinions. Or better: experience of usage. Get renaming, folks!

Or not! The three cases that this would apply to (that I perceive) are:admin wrote:Yes, on the other hand but I find it rather unlikely that you start a rename job and then bail out. Rather you work on your pattern until you get it right. Or?
1) The need to do something else more important in XY arises and you abandon the rename until later so you want to bail-out immediately...
2) Someone who is just trying out the various rename options to better see what they do without actually doing the rename...this might be the most likely for new users...
3) You realize that XY rename feature, while great, may not do what you wish so you decide to use a dedicated renamer application...
Yes, admittedly those may be somewhat rare, but since the edit pattern and preview screens are siblings and not parent & child, a cancel would need to go "up" to higher level...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Ok. I changed it back to three buttons. Mainly because pressing Cancel/ESC should not (close the current and then) open another dialog.j_c_hallgren wrote:Or not! ...admin wrote:Yes, on the other hand but I find it rather unlikely that you start a rename job and then bail out. It's better like this. Good you asked for it, thanks!

I realize that sometimes it requires a bit of back-and-forth here to come to a solution that works for both of us, but that's what I love about XY: You, as author, realize that user opinions matters! THANKS again!

Just tried Batch Rename. And on preview I saw, that I made a mistake on selection, so had to escame from rename, not just preview!
So I would prefer 3 buttons on preview!
Maybe some other names for the buttons?
On Batch Rename: Apply, Preview, Cancel
On Rename Preview: Apply, Back, Cancel
Could this be a self-descriptive way?
Little problem: ESC on Preview! But I wouldn't think it wrong to be Cancel - as normally expected - thus exiting whole rename.

Other names for the buttons? I think they work as they are.

Ok, so this looks good yes, but:
- menu "Preview All" : that's an odd label, I think it should be more along "Preview on automatic renames" because I think it's clearer that way as to what it does, and the fat that when disabled you still get a preview for "regular"/user-action-required renames (whereas to not preview all could be thought as never preview...)
- it really should get checked when enabled, how else are we supposed to know what setting is set? (wasn't that also part of the point?)
- I think it belongs somewhere on Config as well, like other options (Auto-Refresh, etc) that can be found on menus as well
- I really would like an easy way, keyboard driven, to go back to edit pattern. Something else than Alt+E, like Citrl+Enter (counter intiuitive?) or Shift+Esc maybe...

Yes "Preview All" is not so good. I just did not have a better idea. "Preview on automatic renames"... no, not really. Maybe just "Show Preview"?jacky wrote:Ok, so this looks good yes, but:

should get checked: it does get checked!

hmm.. but it kinda implies again that it relates for ALL renames, while in fact it only applies to "automatic" modes, when there's no pattern for the user to specify (case changes, MP3, etc)admin wrote:Yes "Preview All" is not so good. Yeah ok I found out the problem: I only use Rename Special (which I use quite often) basically through a KS, and it seems that the checked state is never updated when doing so, only when going by the (main/context) menusadmin wrote:should get checked: it does get checked!![]()

Maybe "Preview All" is not that bad: If checked you (can) get a preview for all renames, if unchecked you can get a preview only for some previews.jacky wrote:hmm.. but it kinda implies again that it relates for ALL renames, while in fact it only applies to "automatic" modes, when there's no pattern for the user to specify (case changes, MP3, etc)admin wrote:Yes "Preview All" is not so good. Yep, I'll fix that.jacky wrote:Yeah ok I found out the problem: I only use Rename Special (which I use quite often) basically through a KS, and it seems that the checked state is never updated when doing so, only when going by the (main/context) menusadmin wrote:should get checked: it does get checked!![]()

That's exactly why I chose that literal/label! Because it's either 'all' or 'some'....besides, once one has read the Help or wiki, you know what it does, so the label is just a reminder...admin wrote:Maybe "Preview All" is not that bad: If checked you (can) get a preview for all renames, if unchecked you can get a preview only for some previews.
Agreed! I just didn't want it to there only as it's one of those that users may wish to switch on-the-fly more often than others...jacky wrote:- I think it belongs somewhere on Config as well, like other options (Auto-Refresh, etc) that can be found on menus as well

hmm but that's forgetting user-driven renames can be previewed or not regardless of this setting, which in fact only applies to automatic ones.
ok, I can see there's not perfect label for this one, I'm sill not a fan of "Preview All", and I would tend to say it really means nothing if used as such on Configuration. (And it might be better to use the same wording for the two places that setting can be changed, no?)
"Preview Direct/Automatic Rename Operations First/Too" ?

jacky, aren't there some options in various products you use that have labels that mean nothing to you until you get to know the product? It's been that way for me, and still is in some products, where I have to go back to Help to remember what it was...so given that drop-down menus should be descriptive (agreed) but not always full text as that would make it tooooooooo long, I still think "Preview All" is a good compromise between those.
How about "Preview Preset" or "Preview Auto" or "Preview Built-in" or something similar if "All" doesn't do it for ya?
