Use this command to refresh your cache for the current list:
View | Caches | Refresh Thumbnails

It might generally also work better for you if you untick this (in case it is ticked):
Configuration | Thumbnails | Show cached thumbnails only

Note that BassDrumPedalSetup.pdf was not among the files you sent me for testing.

yes but same problem and same batch in a folder

How do I get this to work?
XY is now the only program with the generic thumbnail problem. (M$ fixed theirs)

and will the jpg cache be lost until rebuilt over time?

Well, it works here, so it's not a problem of XY, but some configuration or usage matter.

I've run out of ideas for the moment. (I'm sure you already tested it with a fresh instance...)

fresh instance != new beta version

fresh instance means virgin config. See https://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=fresh

Thanks for the link - looks interesting - but useless to me and custom configs.

See attached: no difference.

If you untick *.pdf in Configuration | Previewed Formats | File types within category Office Files:
2016-12-13_094107.png
you should get a thumbnail-like preview in the Preview tab like this:
