List colors dependent on bg color

Post by tedy »

Hi.
l don't know when this started, just noticing.
There is a new bug in the list colors management.
If I enable Show Grid in list view (Details view), that is - with the default zebra striping (1), Grid color is dependent on Background color. Options - Colorsand Styles - Colors.
I set List -> Background to EEEEEE, then Grid to E7E7E7 to enable light zebra striping.
The actual color appears much darker, it seems it is based somehow on the background color. If Background is White (FFFFFF), then it is Ok. But with Background as EEEEEE, the E7E7E7 is actually D8D8D8.

Not a bug, but a feature. See viewtopic.php?p=139273#p139273

Thanks.
Still, this is illogical to most people, and not to have an option to disable this behavior (none that I know or saw of in the other thread - I deleted it for now anyway, this "feature" shouldn't be forced if there is a set-up already in place). When you (I) set a color for an element, I expect it to be *that* color after all, and not forced to do math to try to match colors differences in such color-relationships :( .
I disapprove such "wise" things. Maybe I'm old-fashioned..., I'm still in my 30's.
v17.XX's have other .... bugs (issues) that make it a no-go currently (v16 are still rock-solid). Maybe it needs more time to stabilize more.
XY is known for its versatility and that new features are optional and not forceful. I hope it won't go downhill as almost all softwares for the last few years.

Yes, it's smart but I see only improvement. Show me a screenshot where it looks bad.

What screenshot?
I was talking about the disparity between what the user specifies as color # for, say, Grid color, and what s/he gets actually on screen.
In the other thread I saw some formula how you calculate resulting colors or something like that. If one enters #E7E7E7, it's E7E7E7 what s/he expects the color of the item to be.
Anyway, I see the damage is already done and I just hope such decisions won't come up frequently to the otherwise wonderful program. Or maybe there is some hidden advanced option this can be disabled with?

Think of the grid as colored glass. The background will shine through, and your grid will work independently of the actual background color. For a light grid choose e.g. F7F7F7. This will work on FFFFFF as well as on EEEEEE.

So, if I have a blue background and a yellow grid, with your analogy of coloured glass the grid would appear as black (no blue light will pass through yellow glass). Is that the case? If so, I don't think that it's "smart" for a yellow grid to appear as black!.
As you know, I can't run XY on my systems any longer, so I can't check.

OK, maybe "glass" was not the correct way to think about it. Pure yellow (FFFF00) on pure blue (0000FF) will result in 4040FF with the current settings (see image). The is the same as Photoshop blend mode "Screen" at 25% opacity. (BTW, XY uses currently three different formulas depending on the input parameters.)

Hmmm, interesting. So it's not anything like the colour I would have set in the configuration.

It would therefore appear that, by picking the wrong combination, the grid colour could end up the same as the text, or have you thought of that one and prevented the clash?

However, a suggestion: In the configuration box that displays the colour how about splitting it and showing the colour selected (yellow in this case) and the colour that will actually be displayed?

Since XY uses different formulas depending on the input parameters, it's not possible for the user to even guess what colour is going to appear, let alone calculate it.

That was exactly what I was talking about!
The end result depends on so many factors. It's far beyond normal. Far!
I wouldn't want the program to choose and calculate/mix the colors. For instance I want blue-ish grid on yellow Bg. Simple as that. I don't know or couldn't know how to calculate (or don't want to go through the headache to experiment with colors until I get the near-desired effect) the end result. I have colors I want applied to both elements. It's my responsibility to choose them to my liking instead of wondering what to enter to get the desired result.
Is this decision only for the Grid? If not, I guess there would be many confusing situations if we want to exactly match colors for different elements.

Ok ok, I add an option. Fight smartness where you can.

You'll never see me fight smartness when it is... useful for all. Many softwares forcefully abandon options and introduce new ways to do things, which is often an awkward and harder way to do those things (to say the least). But XY is another matter (one of very few in the software world lately) and this was the first time ever that I find a new feature (with missing option to revert) to be totally confusing and counter-productive for many, even if only being a one-time configuration annoyance. I really couldn't (and still can't) believe such thing was thought of (and precious time was lost) being introduced into XY. Confusing things ain't smart :P . Anyone who knows how to lower their background to for example F7F7F7 would perfectly know that if they wanted a lightly darker Grid, they should have used something like F0F0F0 or something (and not F7F7F7 again).
An option to switch to the simple way of doing color things was very welcome :) .

I think the feature isn't confusing at all, maybe a missing clear mode flag is.

I welcome such a "auto-contrast/accent color" mode.

In a F0F0F0 background, my E7E7E7 grid color results in actual D8D8D8. Not confusing?! Ok.
If this mode is to stay (as an option), I would implement it different way - maybe the color that is dependent on another, should get a percent slider instead of color entry field. 100% = the same as the other color, down to 0% where it would be black or whatever. That would be consistent and logical.

P.S. In current implementation how about if I want the color to be lighter than the referent color? I certainly can do the math from the other thread and see if that's doable, but I certainly can't imagine with my current knowledge (only that is is dependent and below FFFFFF is "darker"). And I don't think I'm stupid or computer-illiterate.
