Are special settings required for 'contents' searches of doc

Yes, 32-bit version. I forgot why, but there was a reason to avoid the 64-bit. Anyway, this issue with the iFilter is good to know. I just discovered that I had no iFilter for PDFs, so just downloaded and installed that.

If Name is not checked, nothing in the Name panel will apply to the search.

It is most likely running as a 32bit program - but who knows what M$ it doing these days.
I do not see an 'About' F1 is useless?

Menu - Files - Help -> Right side. It even mentions the bitness right beside the installed version...

Click right on taskbar, run Task Manager, go into Processes, and the office process (any 32-bit process) will say 32-bit.

For the record, historically Microsoft hasn't made life easy when it comes to getting the 32-bit IFilter on 64-bit Windows:

If memory serves when I was using Office 2010 on Windows 7 I wasn't able to ever get the IFilters working in XY - Microsoft's installer would only install those matching the OS bitness and my attempts to register the 32-bit ones manually never met success.

Since then I had to have IT re-image my machine, which upgraded me to Office 2013. Today's the first I noticed that it seems to have improved the IFilter situation, but I didn't really do a comprehensive test of that this morning.

Though to update further our IT has now partially adopted 365 and has mostly pushed us to Office 2016 (except for Visio ) and the 32-bit filters still work for me in XY.

It seems your iFilters were either not installed / their registration is broken.
Solution? Maybe repairing / reinstalling your Word installation will help or try
the FilterPack32bit.exe from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=17062

It does not say it is compatible with Win 10.

If it will damage the current Word install then I will use NON XY software.

It probably won't install anyway MS has become a rather crappy OS / Office manufacturer and installing 32bit iFilters on a 64bit OS with the file from the link (and only the 32bit version matters!) is probably impossible.

So, either create a system restore point or better: an image from the system partition and reinstall / repair your Word installation or use a different product to search your office files. E.g. https://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack or it's big brother, FileLocator Pro. They bring their own iFilters to search in office files...

Fixing a Word install does nothing to existing word files IMHO.

Installed the software and was blown away on the very first 'apparently' flawless search.
That is rare for me.
