"Portable File Manager for Windows"

Post by admin »

Here is one for our native English speakers: In XYplorer's official subtitle "Portable File Manager for Windows", is the "portable" understood as somehow limiting the concept of file manager? In the sense of "It's not a real full-blown file manager, but just a portable one"? In the sense that a "portable cd player" is not expected to have the quality of a "real" cd player?

In other words, would it be clever to change that line to just "File Manager for Windows"?

I agree, using the word Portable in the main banner and description could be interpreted as something other than what XY is. A full fledged file manager and more.

Yes, I suppose there are some people that it might mislead. You have "It's Portable" as your first description point anyway so it shouldn't be missed by those looking for a new File Manager.

I had never really thought about it, but yes, your concern does make sense. "Extreme" or "Advanced" might be a better description anyway....

I'll risk responding even though my name does not start with a 'k'.

While I agree that interpretation is possible I doubt it happens often.

People aware of PortableApps and that meaning of portable will know immediately what your usage means.

If not, then I think they are more likely to jump to interpreting it as compact/small and easily carried. Though, I'm not sure how they will apply this to a file manager.

Portable CD players and the comparison to high-end audio equipment is lost on the younger generations. They are more likely to equate portable to their smartphone which is vastly more capable than most of the non-portable things they replace.

Personally, "portable" was a major factor when I found XY but admittedly is less important to me now.
With the companies pushing their own stores these days, I think XY would benefit most by being available there - and it looks like Microsoft is opening their doors enough that it might be closer to possible now.

Well, I've done it. It's an experiment. Like all those things.

I agree with the klan. Having "Portable" first makes this appear to be the primary attribute or distinction. But I wouldn't use simply "File Manager for Windows". It should at least be "Advanced File Manager for Windows". "Advanced" is heavily used but it still catches the eye and conveys what you really need to present.

Advanced sounds like complicated. But XYplorer wants to be easy. While not yet totally achieved it's a major design goal.

Also, "advanced" was already used many years ago with TrackerV3, XY's predecessor. I cannot go back to an old slogan.

Why not? It worked to convince me back then and probably still would today...

Rather than "advanced" why not use the term "Fully featured"?

what about Powerful File Manager for Windows ? But actually I think it is fine the way it is now. A user who is interested in alternative file managers surely can decide for themselves whether it is powerful, flexible, versatile, time-saving, portable, whatever they care about.
