Default Image Viewer

Post by riggy69 »

I have recently installed XYPlorer on my 64bit Windows 10 (Build 1607) machine. There seems to be a problem with the default application for viewing images. Everytime I try to open a .jpg image from within XYplorer, the "How Do You Want To Open This File" dialog opens (see screenshot). No matter which choice I make and having checked the "Always Use This App" check box, the setting is not held and the dialogue constantly reappears next time I try to open an image. If I double click on an image outside of XYplorer, from the desktop for example, the chosen default application opens OK. Does anyone have an answer to this?

Hi and welcome to the XYplorer forum.

I had very similar experience when I upgraded to Windows 10, but only on one of three Windows 10 computers. I did finally fix the problem. I use ImageEye as my default viewer, but the dialog box you refer to kept coming up and as you said, it's very annoying. It's been awhile since I fixed the issue, but I first went into Settings from the start menu, then selected "System" and from there selected "Default App". For the category "Photo Viewer", select the image viewer you want as the default. I remember having to do this a few times. From the Default Apps screen you can also scroll down to see "Choose Default apps by file type" and change the associations as you see fit. Finally after many repeats, the setting "stuck". I remember also going into the registry as well but hopefully that won't be necessary in your case. If it's not sticking, you may want to do a cold reboot after applying the setting. Good luck.

I also checked the "Previewed Formats" in XY's Configuration, just to make sure they are correct and properly checked off for Image Files catagory, but I don't believe I had to change anything in XYplorer.

Edit: A better method may be to go from the Default Apps screen under Settings and scroll down to the very last option, which is "Set defaults by app". This will bring up the older Windows method for setting the defaults (via Control Panel). From there you would select your viewing application, as in my case ImageEye, and you would select all the file types like GIF and JPG you want associated with that viewer.

This sounds like your standard application can't be found (wrong path most probably) when started from within XY.
XY is a 32bit application and therefore uses the detour via SysWOW64 to call 64bit applications.
If you know the path to your app you could also try to create a file association within XY that overrides the system standard (in your case with the same app).

PS: Welcome to the club!

Thanks for the reply klownboy. I have now also installed ImageEye and set is the default viewer. However, just as before, double clicking an image from within XYPlorer repeatedly results in the "how do you want open this file" dialogue, even though the IamageEye icon is shown next to the filename. Outside of XYplorer it works fine. I have gone through all the default app settings and rebooted but still no luck. I suppose I'll have to wait and see if it suddenly sticks as in your case.

- XY version?
- Did you try it with a ::fresh; {ENTER}
from the address bar and opening a .jpg from that instance?

Can't replicate your issue with a fresh Redstone 1 installation. XY uses what Windows has set as default. And it already sticks, otherwise Windows would ask for a standard app each time you open a .jpg from Windows Explorer.

Highend: The XY version is 17.00.0100. I am a little bit techy, but not greatly so. How do I try the ::fresh; {Enter} suggestion?
Ralph: The path for my newly set current default viewer is: C:\Program Files\Image Eye\Image Eye.exe, how do I try your suggestion in the XY configuration?

How do I try the ::fresh; {Enter} suggestion?
You enter:

Code: Select all

::fresh;
in the address bar of XY. Then you hit {Enter}. A new XY instance opens. Double click a .jpg file from that instance.

I see. Try something different then. You settings folder is in:
"C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming"

So maybe in your case:
C:\Users\riggy69\AppData\Roaming

I will refer to the location of this folder by %appdata% (it resolves to ...\Roaming) from now on.

Exit XYplorer
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to this folder (by typing "%appdata%" in the breadcrumb bar) and hitting enter
Now rename XYplorer into XYplorer_old
Start XYplorer again

It should create a new XYplorer folder (in %appdata%) and start with a fresh config.
Open the .jpg file again.

When you want to revert to your old config later
Exit XYplorer
Delete the XYplorer folder (in %appdata%)
Rename XYplorer_old back to XYplorer
Start XYplorer

OK - I've done all that and yes, a new folder was created in the appdata/roaming location. Tried again, but repeatedly with the same result.

There are documented problems with Windows 10 not accepting/applying the default applications or resetting even when the app name and path are correct. So even though you may not have the issue from Windows Explorer, it's still a known problem and not an XYplorer problem. If I remember correctly your best bet will be to try the option I gave in my previous post under "Edit".

Thanks klownboy. I suspected it must be a Windows 10 rather than an XY issue. I had the same issue with Mozilla Thunderbird, but managed to get around that by tinkering with it's internal settings. Images still won't open in that with my preferred choice though, but will with the standard Windows 10 viewer, but it least it holds the default setting. I guess its another case of Microsoft trying to control our choice of apps!

It's an issue that should resolve if you're persistent. :) Try going to the Control Panel by right clicking the start menu button and click on "Default Programs" and use the older Windows method to establish the default file types for Image Eye. After clicking on Image Eye on the left panel, click on "Choose the defaults for this program". If that doesn't work try the first option and "Set this program as default" which would set Image Eye as the default for all image file types. By the way, that's a great viewer isn't it. For times when I'm not using MDBU in XYplorer or for use outside of XYplorer, I use Image Eye. It's not as full service as some others, but its very fast and has a clean interface.

I had already done all you suggested through control panel rather than the Windows 10 settings app. I have now discovered however that the problem seems to be confined to .jpg images. It doesn't ocurr with .png images for example. Strange! Yes, Image Eye does seem to be a good viewer. I'll keep it for now and see how I get on with it.

Since it seems to be a problem with JPG only, you may want to look at the registry for Image Eye. My Image Eye file associations are all listed under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE versus HKEY_LOCAL_USER (all users versus user only - I can't remember if that was an installation option for Image Eye).

In [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\FMJ-Software\Image Eye\Capabilities\FileAssociations] - "jpg" is in the listing of all the file types you would see there.
".jpg"="ImageEye". Maybe you have nothing showing for jpg files or Windows Photo Viewer? So in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT section of the registry, "ImageEye" is listed (with no space) as follows:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ImageEye\shell\open\command with the default command of D:\Graphics\Image Eye\Image Eye.exe "%1"
