Timestamp

Post by jacky »

Ok so you know how one can set a date to the current date, by leaving the field blank? Well I really wish there would be a little trick there to make things a little easier/faster

For example, if a triple-click or middle click would erase/empty the field. Or if along with the 2 icons that show up (Ok/Cancel) there would be that little orange arrow button, either to empty/put the current date/time on field, or like on FF/Date, that would popup a few options: Now, Yesterday, ...

While that middle click would be good for y'all with real 'mice', it wouldn't be so for us with touchpads...

The idea of options pop-up seems the best, as I'd like to see one where you could also set Create=Modified and similar...

Hey, any words on this? I do have to "touch" files quite often lately, and having to each time select the current date and remove it gets quite annoying...

Hey, why not simply add a "Misc" keyboard command "Set Modified Date to Now" or so!?

What about editing time stamps from list context menu?

Just select the files/folders you want to change date and a a popup is showed allowing you to change date on selected files/folders.

Yep, something like that should be done definitely! My current about 7 year old interface is now doubt awkward.

In order to keep the ctx menu as "short" as it is, I would maybe move it into Rename Special, or into the main menu (Edit or Tools).

I agree :)

It might be seven years old, and I know you have talked about changing the little "+" sign, but it is extremely easy to copy timestamps between files. The "conventional" change attributes window, used by several other file managers, does not allow the copying of the complete timestamp and the pasting to another file.
This is something I do often if I've modified an image and want to restore the original timestamp. Change the interface by all means but please don't remove this feature since I use it almost every day.

Maybe Don also could add a even simpler way of copying/adding timestamps. He could just add on the ctx menu (maybe on the clipboard part of it??) Copy timestamp from selected file/folder, Paste timestamp on selected files/folders.

Yes, but it needs to be a little more than that...

Modified (file 1) to Modified (file 2) - the change I use the most.
Modified (file 1) to Created (file 1) - occasionally used.
Modified and Created (file 1) to Modified and Created (file 2) - don't think I ever used that.

Also, set Modified and/or Created to the current time.

This could get cumbersome in a context menu - let's see what idea Donald comes up with.

Can this be a starter?

Copy timestamp from file/folder
- Use Created
- Use Modified
- Use Last Accessed

Paste timestamp to file(s)/folder(s)
- To Created
- To Modified
- To Last Accessed

The "Copy timestamp from file/folder" menu item should be disabled if more than one file or folder is selected. The menu item should also be disabled if nothing is selected.

The "Paste timestamp to file(s)/folder(s)" should also be disabled if nothing is selected.

Hey ;) Yeah actually that would be great I think! You could even go wild:
- Set Created Date of Selected Item(s) to Now
- Set Modified Date of Selected Item(s) to Now
- Set Created Date of Selected Item(s) to Focused Item Created Date
- Set Created Date of Selected Item(s) to Focused Item Modifed Date
- Set Modified Date of Selected Item(s) to Focused Item Created Date
- Set Modified Date of Selected Item(s) to Focused Item Modifed Date

Or just the two firsts, and allow all other combo later using "scriptable hotkeys" to make the list of commands shorter.

(Now imagine all this with custom TB buttons and custom ctxt menus... ;))

ps: I also like the idea of being able to simply copy/paste the created/modified dates using clipboard!

I just had a situation where somehow a group of files in two folders got the wrong dates for both created and modified...the files are named the same in both folders but differ in contents (JPG with diff size/quality)...

They need to all share similar values for create and modified (which are dates in Aug/Sep of 2006), so as of now, I have to go into each and every file and set both values, so having a way to copy/paste these would have proved helpful! And in this case, it'd been good to be able to copy BOTH create/modif as a set to be applied to another file(s), after being able to set modif equal to create, without having to retype it there also.

Modified and Created (file 1) to Modified and Created (file 2) - don't think I ever used that.
So what I needed to do was the first item, followed by the second item using various files as "file 1" and "file 2".

You know that you can timestamp a bunch of files at once with XYplorer?

Yes, I know that...but...in this case, it wouldn't have really helped, I don't believe... :(

Because: I had a set of 8 JPG files...each one was unique and has a matching smaller vers in another folder...I needed to set a unique and particular date/time value for each file in create and modified, and then apply the same values to its clone...thus I was dealing with 8 different values to be applied to 16 files, so having the ability to copy 'create' to 'modif' would have helped build the initial 8 values, and then the ability to copy that pair of values to its clone file would have helped there also, ok?
