Preview stopped working and crashes v16.10

Office 2003 -> No preview handlers -> No .doc preview

but still see "cannot preview" with both pdf

Does the preview work in Windows Explorer?

If yes, post a screenshot and the exact version number of Adobe PDF reader.

PDF preview works in Windows Explorer; doc does not.

I'm using the preview pane, and the crash typically happens shortly after I highlight whatever file I'm interested in - usually when I attempt to open it. Also, I can't open it by double clicking the file - I have to right click/open.

The reader installs a 32-bit preview handler even when used on a 64-bit OS.

The preview window works fine in my VM with Win 7 and XY v16.90.0102.
Trying exactly the same on a Win 8.1 U1 VM -> No preview.

I tried the 32-bit version of xplorer² to see if this makes a difference: Nope, it doesn't work there as well (Win 8.1)

So I wouldn't say that XY is the culprit, other file managers have similar problems with Adobe Acrobat Reader DC...

May I suggest using PDF-X-Change to get .pdf preview capabilities (if you use Win 8.1 x64)? It's just a simple .dll file (in the end) with minimal registry settings.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll make note of it. However, I'll hold off for now. I don't need to preview pdfs that often, and now I know I still have the option of using Windows Explorer if I have to browse a lot of them. I'm glad, though, that I haven't been experiences XY crashes, though to be fair I've generally not used XY Preview for files other than images since the issues first appeared.

Weird. Could it be that you enabled "Configuration | Menus, Mouse, Safety | Mouse | Single click on icon opens list items"?
