Find Files: drop "Boolean logic" checkbox?

Post by admin »

jacky had this idea, and i think it's not a bad one. But you never know with you demanding users...

Since the introduction of the ":"-prefix for search patterns...

Code: Select all

v4.50.0060 - 01.04.06 11:56
+ Find Files, Name: now you can mark patterns as Boolean by a
prefixed colon (":"). If this prefix is set the pattern will be
interpreted as Boolean independently of the state of the Boolean
      checkbox.
... the "Boolean logic" checkbox is just superfluous and confusing. Just as there is no "RegExp" checkbox, it should leave the building, don't you think?

After a year of using XY versions with this new interface I dare to say, that removing "Boolean logic" checkbox was not a very good idea.
As for me, more 90% of all my queries are Boolean searches, so almost every time I have to begin my queries with prefix ":".

Entering a colon sign needs using the both hands (pressing shift or moving mouse). Well, one keystroke or mouse click is not so big trouble and demand as few as 3-5 seconds every time. But if you have to make it 20-30 times per day, and so 365 days it makes... Well I am not able to do such complex calculations at morning, but it have to be very big number  - approx. 5-6 hours of time lost absolutely without any sense.

If you decided to remove this checkbox (IMHO there was nothing confusing with it), you could replace it by some relevant option in general settings, e.g. by a new chekbox "Use Boolean logic without prefix as default" or something like that and may be the same options for regular expressions and common searches.
In this case you could assign some prefix (point, hyphen, etc.) to to make possible common queries without changing general settings.

Or what do you think regarding showing all quiries variants (common, regular expressions and boolean logic) as a drop-down menu "Search type" or as three separate checkboxes on the "Find" tab? In this case any new user can see, what types of searches are allowed.

Leopoldus, so you are still around! :D The top demanding and inspiring power user of the forum's early days! Without Leopoldus, there wouldn't be no Boolean Search, so when Leopoldus talks about Boolean Search I have to listen carefully!

What I could see is a "Mode:" drop-down list (aka combobox) directly below the "Name:" drop-down list, containing those three modes: common (standard, normal?), regular expressions and boolean logic. Those modes would be overwritten by the ":" and ">" prefixes (yep, would be good to have a third prefix for the normal mode).

I like it!

Oh, it's very pleasant, that you remember our old days, Donald!
Yes, I'm here and I keep using your XY 30 times per day 365 days per year, being happy and appreciate every time  Although I had no time enough to write something here in the forum, it was interesting follow how XY grows. Thanks!

Yes, this is exactly was I meaned.

I also like the idea.

Not sure about the name. I think Standard.

Yes, I think this would work also...I could see the values in combobox as the existing comments ("Prefix > for RegExp", "Prefix : for Boolean") plus maybe "No prefix for Standard" so that would describe the values needed if one wanted to type it but also insert them if one didn't wish to type.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
