Re: Folder icons show then disappear
For sure it wasn't the windows update itself. You didn't reboot since this discussion began (and after deleting the windows icon cache file)?

Actually, I had rebooted earlier as well.highend wrote:For sure it wasn't the windows update itself. You didn't reboot since this discussion began (and after deleting the windows icon cache file)?
There is a new development: the missing icon issue is back.
It started happening again after I did extensive file management (creating folders, moving lots of files, filtering, etc.) in XYplorer.
I quit & restarted XYplorer but that didn't help. I'll reboot some time over the next day and see if that helps.

Does your machine have memory issues? E.g. not a lot of RAM?

No, I recently upgraded from 16GB to 32GB (Windows 7 Ultimate).admin wrote:Does your machine have memory issues? E.g. not a lot of RAM?
Re: Folder icons show then disappear
Does the fact that the icons show up at first (upon opening that folder), but then quickly get removed in sequence, top to bottom of the list, tell you anything?
Re: Folder icons show then disappear
Hi again,
I've attached an image of a Word table that shows all the differences between the [Settings] sections in a "fresh" setup versus my setup. (The fresh one has been slightly customized but still shows all the icons as expected.)
Does this help at all? Likewise, does the fact that the icons first show up then disappear in sequence help you figure out what might be going on?
Thank you!
-Roy.
PS: I tried changing most of my settings to match the ones in "fresh", then restarting XYplorer after each change, but nothing helped.

Are you 100% sure that by only overwriting the [Settings] section in a _fresh_ XYplorer.ini with the complete section from your old config (and leaving out all other sections) does produce that behavior? It's hard to believe that you experience it while changing all settings in that section back to fresh ones doesn't revert the behavior

Actually, I see that it's currently not using XYplorer.ini in my current setup, but rather XYplorer-02.ini. So at least part of my recent testing is invalidated. I'll redo it...highend wrote:Are you 100% sure that by only overwriting the [Settings] section in a _fresh_ XYplorer.ini with the complete section from your old config (and leaving out all other sections) does produce that behavior? BTW, one change I made to XYplorer-02.ini, changing "MaxLog=100" to "MaxLog=200" in the [Undo] section, actually causes XYplorer to crash (reproducibly) as soon as I click on any file in the details list. I suppose 200 is an invalid value, right?
Re: Folder icons show then disappear
Depends on the version. v16.70.0001 or higher? It should work. Mine is set to 256.

Using 16.80.highend wrote:Depends on the version. v16.70.0001 or higher? It should work. Mine is set to 256.
Both misbehaviors (the crash and the disappearing icons) are perhaps caused not by one setting but by some combination of settings?
Re: Folder icons show then disappear
Possible. But before thinking about combinations make sure to find out which section is responsible for the icon behavior

Last tests today:highend wrote:Are you 100% sure that by only overwriting the [Settings] section in a _fresh_ XYplorer.ini with the complete section from your old config (and leaving out all other sections) does produce that behavior? 1. Copying the entire [Settings] section from "fresh" to my ini file made the icons problem go away.
2. Copying the entire [Settings] section from my ini file to the "fresh" ini file did not introduce the icons problem there this time.
The first of the two tests above has produced what appears to be a pretty decent configuration, so I'm going to stick with that for now and tweak as necessary (but no more!).
Thanks!!
Re: Folder icons show then disappear
Mh, the only logical result of 1. + 2. is: There must be some side effects between a different section than [Settings] and this one. Probably requires a huge amount of time to rule everything out...
