but I don't know where the "Data" folder you mentioned is
Menu - Go - Go to Application Data Folder

If you want to do the comparison, that's fine. But your current .ini file contains _a lot_ of settings...

I'm going a different way for all the applications I use. I document what settings I've changed :)

You cannot imagine how much time it would have saved me over the years had I done what you do. I'm always tweaking settings in everything, some going back to the 1980s, which means I never want to reinstall/reinitialize anything because I'd lose my customizations. Going from Windows XP to Windows 7 took me weeks (back in 2011), and some things I never got back. Not sure I'm disciplined enough to keep such a list consistently, though.

Anyway, the Application Data Folder is the one in which the "Fresh" folder (and the new one I created) resides. Wouldn't I be copying from a sibling folder to Fresh rather than from its parent folder (which includes Fresh)?

I made the word "move" bold in my last post so that the Fresh folder is empty before you copy the content of the data folder :)

Sorry to be so dense! OK, I make a new folder and move the contents of Fresh there...in what directory is this new folder residing?
If it's at the same level as Fresh, then the new folder would be part of the contents of what I'm moving to the new folder, which would mean I'm moving it inside itself.
BTW, would renaming Fresh achieve the same result, or does it need to stick around empty?
Thanks for you patience!

Just create your new XY folder outside of the current XY folder and then copy the data folder's content over. If you use ::fresh; in an XY instance the "Fresh" folder get's populated but you can always delete it's content afterwards. It's just a portable fresh XY version that gets created there.

I ended up doing what you suggested and unfortunately the problem returned.
I can compare an xyplorer.ini file I backed up last fall with the current one and export the differences in some sections to a text file, if that would help. Just tell me which differences/sections to focus on. (The problem did not exist last fall.)

Try it again with a fresh variant and copy only the XYplorer.ini file over. Same problem afterwards? If yes, concentrate on "[Settings]" section in XYplorer.ini

Could this be related to Custom File Icons? (Configuration | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | Enable custom file icons)

Yes, just copying that one file over recreated the issue.

I tried attaching a text file that shows the list of differences (in "patch" format) between the "[Settings]" sections of the two instances, but apparently I can't attach a file with extension "txt" or "patch". Should I paste the contents here, send it by a different means, or use a different extension?

Answer Don's question first.

.zip files work as attachments.

Sorry, didn't see your question. I don't think it's related to that setting, as it occurs whether or not that box is checked.
Thanks1

OK, I answered admin. I also zipped the text file and attached it here. There are surprisingly (to me) few differences to review.

Thanks!

It doesn't make much sense to look at these values. At least not for me. I can't reproduce your problem so go the logical way:

1. Make a backup of your XYplorer.ini file and keep it save
2. Exchange all sections apart from [Settings] (copy them from your old config file to the new one while overwriting each section)
This will make sure it's really the [Settings] part which is responsible for the current behavior if it still does work after copying all other sections

If that's the case, replace 50 percent of the values. Does it still work? Replace the other half. Broken? Reverse the last change, replace only 25%. It still works? Replace the last 25%. And so on. You'll narrow it down in a few tries and isolate the setting...

As soon as I get a few minutes, I will do that binary search to figure out what causes the symptom and I will report back what I found.
Thanks!

Well well. I rebooted after running a Windows Update and guess what? The problem is automagically gone! Icons are back and all is right with the world.

Thanks guys!!
