general question reg. file copy + creation date

Post by autocart »

Scenario:
I copy & paste a file within the same folder.
The copy is pasted with a postfix and its creation date shows the date/time of the paste.
I move the original file to an archive folder.
Now I rename the copy of the file to the original name (removing the postfix).

Result:
The "creation date" is automatically changed to the creation date of the original file.
This is true in XY but also in Win Exlplorer too. So it's obviously a problem with Windows.
(However, if I do a batch rename in XY - did not test batch in WE - then the creation date stays the same.)

Question:
Does anybody know WHY this happens and how to stop Windows from behaving that stupidly? (EDIT: Using Windows 7)

It's by design. It's a compatibility option for programs that rely on metadata of files being cached for 15 seconds.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem
New D-Word 32 entry: MaximumTunnelEntries
Set it to 0, reboot
