Now we need to find another control for Don to rewriteadmin wrote:I don't know if I can do anything about it, since that edit box in the Address bar is one of the few controls I have not written myself but used the one MS provides. Which appears to be buggy. (Now you see why I re-wrote almost everything myself...) Gotta do some research.
Selecting text in the address bar

But what about "Go to..." and "Go to from Here..." for those of us who don't want to waste screen real estate with the address bar?admin wrote:In fact it did not stop me this time neither!lukescammell wrote:So are you gonna do it?Not knowing how to do it's never stopped you before.

Can the feature be added to these as well please?

Would you agree that "Go to from Here..." should be just like "Go to..." (i.e. with combobox, autocomplete path, and all the other possibilities) -- with only one difference: the default path is set to the current path?Gandolf wrote:But what about "Go to..." and "Go to from Here..." for those of us who don't want to waste screen real estate with the address bar?admin wrote:In fact it did not stop me this time neither!lukescammell wrote:So are you gonna do it?Not knowing how to do it's never stopped you before.

That would make it easier to address your wish.

It gives a starting point of where you are which can be useful if you want to look in several sibling directories. I use it regularly since I have a lot of sub-directories that are just numbers and it's very quick to simply replace, say, 12 with 06 to move to a sibling directory.j_c_hallgren wrote:I've never fully understood in what cases "Go to from here" would be better than "Go to", as "Go to" appears to have more flexibility and options...
Also, from an earlier post:
The reason I use "Go to from here" is that it does not give me a history entry. I use it if I repeatedly want to go to different folders that I copy from a graphics editor. I don't need the history since I'm not going to view them again (in the short term) and it saves loosing history entries.
That, however, no longer appears to be true. I don't know when it changed since I hardly ever use the XY history because I keep any history on my clipboard monitor. That way paths from all applications are saved.
Is this change in behaviour intentional Donald or something that has happened by accident? It was useful not to update the history.

Accident. But I think it's better like this, since I see no meaningful/intuitive relation between "from here" and not updating the history. Rather one could talk about an option not to update the history when using "Go to (from here, or not from here)". But is it good?Gandolf wrote:Is this change in behaviour intentional Donald or something that has happened by accident? It was useful not to update the history.

It's certainly more logical for the history to be updated although, as I said, I have a particular situation where it is useful for the history not to be updated.
Just a thought. Is it practical to use a modifier (Ctrl?) with the mouse click on O.K. or with the enter key to not update the history? This would apply to Address bar, Go to etc...

Not very practical. I already had enough trouble with holding Shift to create a new tab when browsing. The trouble starts when it interfers with keyboard shortcuts...Gandolf wrote:It's certainly more logical for the history to be updated although, as I said, I have a particular situation where it is useful for the history not to be updated.

Ok...and how is this method quicker/easier than selecting the sibling folder from the tree? Or by using the arrow keys?Gandolf wrote:It gives a starting point of where you are which can be useful if you want to look in several sibling directories. Bear with me...maybe I've never had this directory situation setup you're dealing with...and because by the time I select "Go to from here" command, and get the msg box, I could have already selected the desired folder from the tree...

O.K. I understand and things are fine as they are - well not exactly...admin wrote:Not very practical. I already had enough trouble with holding Shift to create a new tab when browsing. The trouble starts when it interfers with keyboard shortcuts...
I thought the idea was that Ctrl+Left/Right arrow jumped to the delimiter "/". It appears to jump to the " ". It works as expected in the address bar but not in "Go to..." or "Go to from Here...".
Not with a keyboard. I avoid the mouse as much as possible since I touch type and can type dozens of keystrokes in the time it takes me to move from the K/B to the mouse.j_c_hallgren wrote:Ok...and how is this method quicker/easier than selecting the sibling folder from the tree?

You know that the tree has select-as-you-type (= type initial letters of a folder), don't you?Gandolf wrote:Not with a keyboard. Is that initial letter or letters? Because when I try and type the second letter of the desired sub-folder, it jumps to another folder not within the current folder...admin wrote:You know that the tree has select-as-you-type (= type initial letters of a folder), don't you?
Ex: Folder B contains folders CA, CB, D, F, HI, HK...and B is within K...
1) I'm on B and type D...it goes there fine...
2) I'm on B and type C...goes to CA...ok, but when I type B, it jumps back up to prior level B, and not to CB..
3) I'm on B and type H...goes to HI...ok...then typing K goes up two levels to K...

You must type fast enough! Tip: < 750 msec between the strokes.j_c_hallgren wrote:Is that initial letter or letters?
