Tweak for cached folder sizes

Post by highend »

I really like the new caching algorithm for folder sizes but may I request a tweak that allows us to enter
folders / drives, separated by "|" where caching doesn't automatically apply / is blocked?

Like:
DoNotCache=F:\Downloads|T:\

OK (tweak for now).

BTW, I'm tempted to store the cache across sessions. What do you think?

I for one wouldn't use that option, because the resetting is a good safety belt against the stale folders. My folder sizes can be only one day old now in the worst case. More would be risky.

By the way, do you store the cache in the memory? Because I have a computer with bit older hard drive and getting folder sizes from the cache seems a bit slow.

+1. As an option please (for those who wouldn't use it). I would (because I have drives which content only changes very infrequently)

Yes, memory.

The tweak doesn't seem to work?

I currently use:
CacheFolderSizesExclude=C:\|T:\

And when I switch to the T:\ drive (2,5 SATAIII) the status line states:
getting folder sizes...(ESC to stop)

until it has calculated all values (> 20 seconds)

The same for the C:\ drive (although it only takes about 3 - 5 seconds (ssd))

Well, that was the idea, right? Folder Sizes are always freshly calculated.

Emmmh, I meant something different but when I read my first post...

What I was really  requesting (at least that's what I wanted) was a tweak to block folder size calculation on specific folders / drives. Sorry, my fault!

I found the request totally meaningful!

So what you really wanted is pretty much the opposite? Dunno... too much tweaking for my taste. You can handle this by using different tabs or by FVS.

Sure, the current tweak is useful (for folders where you need the exact size at all times), no doubt about it.

But when somebody uses:
Configuration | Tree and List | List | Always show folder sizes in lists

it makes sense to exclude folders / drives as well where you're not interested in their size, e.g. because you have
- Enough space on them anyway
- Want to calculate size only on specific folders manually (when you really need it)

The caching feature is great because now I can use the automatic calculation enabled at all times but on large drives
with lots of data but where the content changes only from time to time (backup drives for example) it hinders you
from working when the calculation takes place. And no, always pressing ESC isn't really an option :)

Anybody else who would find that useful as well?

Yes!

But before: thanks for the caching idea and implementation! :appl:

My scenario: 3x SSD, 1x (2x) 5.400rpm HD (backups only)

I want to show ad-hoc calculated folder sizes for all SSDs everywhere and all the time (even for the Lightroom catalogu including the referenced images).

But I want to show cached folder sizes on the entire HD only (calculated once per session or on demand). During my backup sessions (twice per week with visual checks afterwards) I switch on my 2nd external backup HD, and then it gets painfully slow (and loud  ). Yeah, having to hit <esc> each time is somewhat annoying then.

Cheers,
Filehero
