XY has unresolved file handling problem(s)

Post by pat55 »

I had about 50 files for a financial database I maintain in a single folder. When I loaded these files, one at a time, into reliable software
that I have used for years, made my changes and then saved it back to the original folder - this should cause a collision in that a file by that
name exists there. In the past, with whatever software, I would overwrite (replace the unaltered file) as intended.

With this batch of 50 files in XY - about 1/3 was done correctly. 1/3 provided no message that there was a collision.
The last 1/3 prompted correctly - hit enter to overwrite and then did NOTHING.

We have also seen that overwrite a file has not had all the attention needed in this otherwise fine software.
This was all done with version 16.70 which I can not use for my work for the obvious reasons.

You keep throwing accusations in XY's direction which aren't necessarily XY's fault.
The way you describe the workflow here:

doesn't seem to use XY's functions in any way to save the files but rather the ones of your "reliable" database soft?!

This sounds like some files were not overwritable because they were in use. What extension do they have?

most were .jpg
I just hate all this unanticipated bad news. I am also surprised to find this much unresolved code in XY.
One can open a file - update the same file - save it. Which is what I do every market day.
This is standard and has been for many years. It can not reasonably be done without IMHO.

PS.
Apparently few people are really concerned about any of this.

Not being able to overwrite a file means: The file is locked (by an application) or write protected / user with not enough permissions

Remove the checkmark for *.jpg, in Menu - Tools - Configuration... - Preview - Previewed Formats to see if any preview locked the file...

I'm more of a user than a code writer - these days.
Attached is my 1000 words :-)

I was in the process of sending more than one attachment - this forum does not do that.
To uncheck *.jpg as you suggest - does what?

I shall give it a try later today.

Did two small trials with .jpg checked and unchecked - the icon did NOT change for that menu item #19
What does this turning off prove about anything when the program is pre-selected by me?

I only did 12 - 20 items (and not 50+) and WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.
As I recall the problems started later in the process and got worse and worse and worse after about 25 files.
When it is time- I do not mind eating HUMBLE PIE rather than BS and trash talk everyone.

There definitely are some issues. This PC has been totally stable - as have most of the programs
that I have been using. The exception has been XY which has been the most temperamental - which is
understandable for the size and scope of what it has undertaken with good success.

It is my WAG (Wild Ass Guess is that there is some piece of logic or code that cause problems from time to time.
I had that happen during my DOS days in a prior life.

Icon change, what?
Program pre-selected?
No clue what you're talking about...
I only did 12 - 20 items (and not 50+) and WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM.
And now you do it 50 times and see if you can still replicate it. If not, previewing a file (probably) caused the locking and therefore the problem to overwrite them...

The association assignment for item number 19 -REMAINS UNCHANGED EVEN AFTER UNCHECKED as can be seen in XY screen capture attachment.
What is the significance or use of this whole association menu?
I typically use "open with" when I want to change it to a different default application.

Your hunch about the cause is as good as any IMHO.
A number of previews were corrupt but using F11 - that cleared up yesterday.

I just got through googling "xy slow to open or at startup" This has gotten worse over the last two weeks. So this morning I was all set with a stopwatch etc...
Suddenly it was back to a normal quick start.
I'm using SSDs and a fast processor, dual gtx980s

It's about previewing file types, not about associating them^^^^
