How do you want to open this file NO MATTER WHAT

Post by pat55 »

Keep getting a persistent "How do you want to open this file?"
Only in XY
Only for Docx
Not for doc or txt and there is no problem when the MS Explorer is used.

Yes I have checked the association that I always want to use Word 2010 for docx files
When I check file properties - it is correctly set for Word.

Is this a known flaw or is there a way to fix this in XY?

Just installed XY ver 16.70
Same outcome.
Is this a known flaw in that nobody can start a word 2010 or later without
getting the attached screen every time?

This might be a Windows 10 bug. I have seen this quite often, not just in XY.

Does the fact that the MS File Explorer does NOT have the same problem - in this case -
not tell us that perhaps XY can not handle docx or perhaps any four letter extension?

I just opened a docx file from XY without that popup.
Should've mentioned that picker pops up gradually less often, perhaps it takes a few tries for the associations to stick.

I have had docx since July of last year.
It will be simpler for me to just use the M$ File Exp for my document files set for one of the limited number of favorites in it.
I would like to have discovered that there was (another) obscure setting in XY that fixed all.
Thanks for taking the time.

I open all sorts of MS ...x files all the time from XY (in Office 2013 32bit) and never had that popup or any other problem with it so far.
Maybe one more thing to look at is the bitness of the programs involved if you're running a 64bit OS.

Could it be UAC (User Access Control) which is prohibiting file type associations? I don't have Windows 10, but in older Windows versions file type associations don't stick when UAC is enabled and your program (XYplorer in this case) is not elevated.

I just tested xy and docx on my 5 year old Win 7 not updated to W10 - there was no problem.
Both have the exact same XY settings.
My new pc has the best of everything from processor, graphics cards to solid state drives etc

So while testing it on your old computer, did you also compare my suggestion and Statler's?
Anyway it proved at least that it obviously isn't a general problem with XY and MS ...x file types.

I made an error in my message:
5 year old Win 7 not updated to W10
should have been:
5 year old Win 7 NOW updated to W10

This particular problem with XY is minor and I will just use File Explorer for docx files - when I remember ;-) .

You can make a PFA to open docx in Word, completely ignoring what Windows tries to do.
Tools> Customize file associations.

Code: Select all

::rtfm "idh_fileassociations.htm";

...which still doesn't answer whether you actually compared the bitness, config, UAC settings of those two computers.
We're really trying to help but only if you let us.

I just checked and the problem has NOT gone away by itself (as others did)
Bitness - I had to look it up :-) win 10 64bit

config - I posted a number off screens - any of particular interest?

UAC settings - I have always used the default as per M$. I never tampered or experimented with it.
I would have to look for it in w10

I appreciate the efforts of everyone here!

Have you tried this? Paste the code into XY's addressbar and you'll find yourself with detailed help on PFAs/custom file associations.

I still maintain that these popups will go away in time
