This does help, but, still falls short for one important thing for me: I add a new FLAC ID-Tag which does not appear in any of the extended Property fields for Explorer, and as such, I can't display this tag in XY.

Don't despair! I'm positive we can get that metadata to show in XY it just means creating a Custom Column that digs a little deeper.

Admittedly, I haven't played with mediainfo (yet), but I'm sure someone else here can help if you get stuck.

It also might be relatively painless to extract metadata from FLAC without a third-party tool, but it might take me some time to familiarize myself with the file format, and I'm not sure the end result would actually perform any better than the above.

Sigh, I had huge hopes for this one, tried it out, but alas, it seems it only supports a very limited set of common tag names:

It doesn't seem this utility supports custom Vorbis tags

What was the commandline syntax you used?

OK with just the filename, and no parameters, like you did, I got ALL the tags, including the custom tag, you are indeed correct! Excellent. Now, how to get just the custom tag, and then, use that syntax in a custom XY column so that the list executes that commandline for each file in the folder?

Don't forget, using a third party app for custom columns is... not the fastest way...

So use "List" instead of "Browse" (if scrolling isn't too important) for the custom column

XY is well positioned for images though. The timing is perfect with the quality of smartphone cameras and the fact that the major photo services still have rough edges. In fact, with Google killing off Picasa soon there might be an opening to attract customers by offering more in the way of editing/managing photo tags (EXIF).

Correcting dates or locations, adding descriptions of the content, owner, or copyright info?

My point was more it might be a good time to see what all Picasa does and see if there's anything that might make sense as part of XYplorer. It's probably a limited set of features, organizing photos into album folders, but perhaps not.

Writing tags came to mind as the last time I used Picasa it was to help my mother document her travels by adding descriptions to her photos.

We will see how the demand develops. Up to now there hasn't been much. I will soon add the new Preview Pane to the main window, that should drive even more photographers to our shores...
