Going nuts with xyplorer.ini

I used to put XY-noinstall into my program files folder. I just upgraded and chose the install version. It chose program files (x86). OK, I'm fine with that.

Then I copied my data folder from the old location (program files) to the new location (program files (x86)) and expected everything to be just like it was. NOT!!! Here's the biggest problem that I can SEE; no telling what I can't SEE...

The toolbar in the new location appears to be the default one. It certainly is not my customized one. Yet, when I launch the older version, the toolbar is what I want. So I did a diff on the ini files, and, by golly, they were IDENTICAL! HUH????

I guess I can do an installation into the program files directory, overwriting the exe and I imagine all will be as I want. However, I'm confused by all this and would like to understand it.

Anyone out there care to tell me what I'm missing? I will be so grateful...

The installed version doesn't store it's settings in the folder where it's installed but normally in %appdata%\XYplorer
(if this wasn't changed in the "Startup.ini" file in the install path of XY).

So you need to make sure you copy your old files into that folder...

From within XY you can use Go | Go to Application Data Folder to view the data folder (this is the same as typing <xydata> into the address bar).

You can also see the paths in use by looking at Help | Various Information.

OMG! Thanks highend! Yes, I found the file in \AppData\Roaming\XYplorer. Frankly then, the installed version is NOT portable. Only the no-install versions are portable. IMHO. And If I had read the readmeXY.txt more carefully, I would have seen this. I thought Don had not mentioned this, but, as usual, he did. I missed it.

Don says it. Near the top of the ReadXY.txt says it's a portable file manager. And then in the information about the installable version, he does not mention that the installable is not portable. I think that should be explicit.

I'd not "install" a portable program into program files. (I.e. extract it there.) For me this is unusual.
I'm afraid if you do you have to think about where to place the data files. XY contains everything you need to do that.

No. Portable applications don't belong into UAC protected folders... Yeah, they can be still portable but they need admin permissions for every little bit that happens in such a folder (create an .ini file, etc.).

I keep portable apps in Program Files... I didn't even think about UAC though. I just have been doing it so I can keep track of where they are. I have a
C:\Program Files (x86)\Portables\
and a
C:\Program Files\Portables\
Also though, I always keep UAC off...

Hm - here my thoughts:

You may differentiate between portable and no-install programs.
- portable should have it's data files inside (down of) it's install directory. (Think of USB-Stick )
- no-install should not. (As you see by this topic )

XY is portable. But has all means to change that at will.
