URL drop failed: path length exceeding 260 char limit

Post by yogi »

Hi,

Drag&Dropping a URL from Google Chrome onto XYplorer with a very long name will fail.
I thought that XYplorer supports long filenames.

Example:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Hobbit-Deso ... ug+blu+ray

The title of this website is 264 characters long.

I use Win7x64 + the installation free XYplorer 13.80.0100

I'm running v15.00.0211 under Windows 7 32-bit. I still have a drag & drop problem with too-long URLs. For example, I got to the following webpage in Chrome:

http://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4864164

When I attempt to drag & drop the page URL from the addressbar into a folder, it expands into a too-long title. If I'm dragging into Windows Explorer, the result is that nothing happens i.e. the link simply won't drag.

But if I drag from the addressbar into XY, everything hangs. I finally have to kill XY to get the process to unlock. Now it would be super-cool if XY could succeed where WE fails (maybe by truncating the URL text), but at least it would be nice to avoid the hang, because I can't ever be sure when this is going to happen.

No problem here with that URL. Only 211 chars:

[TR24][SM][OF] Mozart - Requiem in D Minor, K. 626 (Sandrine Piau, Sara Mingardo, Werner Gura, Christopher Purves, Accentus, Insula Orchestra, Laurence Equilbey) - 2014 (Classical, Choral, Sacred) RuTracker.org

I should have been more complete on the circumstances. With a ::fresh instance of XY v15.80.003, I create a folder with name length 88 chars, total path length 100 chars. I attempt to drag & drop into it the url from this page:

http://rutracker.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4864164

This has a total destination path & name length of >300 chars.

XY will freeze and never recover, and must be killed. If I do the same thing in WE, nothing happens - no url is copied but there is no freeze either.

Likewise, it happens to Windows Explorer as well, doesn't it?

By "WE" I meant Windows Explorer. The freeze does not happen in Windows Explorer. The long URL is simply not copied i.e. the copy silently fails. WE works fine after that and so does the browser.

In contrast, attempting to drag & drop such a long URL into an already-long path in XY causes XY to permanently hang, which BTW also locks up the browser.

I can't easily tell when the URL will be so long, so yesterday I had to kill XY at least 5 times. I don't want to run with support for long pathnames enabled because that masks file copy issues related to these, which can show up as problems later. In my personal usage it's better to find them early.

What should happen in such a case: Error message?

Yes, I think an error message would be best, if you can do that. Second best would be to do nothing like WE.

Very cool would be if XY could offer to shorten the descriptive text in the URL (crop off the end of the name) to where it will fit. That's what I have to do manually anyway, either in an editor or after dragging the URL to the desktop.

But - even just an error message will be great!

Thanks.

v15.90.0020 seems to be fine. The URL I reported above can now drag into XY with no crash. So does the one reported first by yogi. This is without having "Support Overlong Filenames" enabled.
