I allow it, but won't show it?

Post by John Bee »

In 6.00.0017, one of the new items:

* Find Files: now when the Size filter is active, folders (which are
seen as having 0 bytes here anyway) will not be listed in search
results anymore (even if you are looking for "0 bytes at most").

This (to me) does not make any sense! :?

You are saying - "I allow you to select for search "0 bytes at most" but I won't show it to you"

If you are not going to allow it, then you shouldn't be able to search for it.

And by the way, I DO use this precise search to find all empty folders in a main folder.

(EDIT: Ok, the - for totally empty folders makes up for the above. But I still say you should not allow searching for something you will not show any results for.)

But this never worked! The size filter set to max=0 bytes always returned all folders! Now it never returns any folders, because it just does not work for folders.
Also: 0 bytes is not the same as empty. A 0 bytes folder can contain any number of zero-byte files and any number of (empty) folders.

I always wondered about that, but I just worked around it.

But then then the person searching for 0 byte folders will think there are none, when in fact there are.

Yes, I am aware of this, but when I search for 0 byte folders, I am searching for folders with no viable content. I don't care if there are folders/files in sub-folders, as long as it shows 0 bytes I know I can delete the folder.

Also while the - for truly empty folders is nice, I still have to rely on the 0 byte to find empty folders. For example: folder A has a subfolder (A1) in it The list shows this as 0 byte because of the subfolder in it, even though A1 is also empty which shows up as -.

However, I think I am splitting hairs here, so I will take this new feature as a bonus. :D

John: if you're looking for empty folders in one parent folder, don't bother with a search: Just press Shift+F5 (Calculate Folder Sizes)
Then all folders shown with '-' are "really" empty, and those with '0' only have empty folders/files in them.

You can even select a few folders before to limit the calculation to those, if you know some are not empty. (And you can still make a search for folders if you want, and then press Shift+F5 from search results)
