[Pending]new feature wish: frozen folders/cold columns

Post by bdeshi »

I've added a column for display names of fonts in a folder containing thousands of them.
Problem is every time open that folder or even change tabs, all the fonts are queried for the title, resulting into a noticeable delay.
So could you please add a caching feature like saved searchsresults which [temporarily] freezes the column data of locations?
I KNOW nothing is going to change in that location for while (or don't care), so reading those thousands of fonts repeatedly in unnecessary.

Just give us an option to freeze a location( or locations), so that no column, no anything, is refreshed until I ask it to refresh.
The frozen state is only updated if:
1. columns are added/removed (new column data is calculated one time added to frozen state)
2. items are remvoed/added (rows are forgotten, or new rows are added to frozen state)
A "freeze" button maybe? One click: freeze folder, another click: refresh and update freeze state. Right click toggles. (okay maybe I'll leave this to Don)

Sounds like an extension of Paper Folders. Possible but tricky. This is a major feature. But, of course, I love the name "frozen folders". It just has to be done. But not now, this needs some thinking. Next year maybe.

I did not understand this to have anything to do with paper folders, since the items of the list should update (on copy/move/create... or delete) in a completely usual manner.
Only certain colums should be frozen (so a better name might be "frozen columns").

It should be possible to apply this to any list details view (with columns) that you may navigate to, may it be in a normal folder, paper folder or where ever.

You are right.

I have put frozen folders somewhere deep down in my brain. One day it will spit out something useful.

Yeah, my idea is more like what autocart said. But instead of "Only certain columns" all columns are frozen, to avoid confusion.
Basically, a manual refresh mode that also affects when columns data are updated.

Looking forward to whatever this turns out to be! :D

It's probably a normal "Property column"

"#21 Title" on my OS...

I don't want to be a nitpicker / bean-counter but in order to avoid misunderstanding:

Sammay, what does "also" mean in this context? Should the manual refresh not "only" update the columns data?
Or do you mean you want to include the columns-refresh into the usual refresh-command (#1001)?

It's a special folder in Windows, maybe it's not treated correctly by XY.

Sorry, I was comparing it with the auto-refresh cmd. Turning off auto-refresh stops updating current list, but when you go to another location, everything is still reloaded. The suggested manual refresh mode will block updates even in that case. Hope this explains better.

@yusef: Xyplorer treats the Fonts folder almost as specially as WE does (hint: Try right clicking). [I don't know why Don did this.]
The folder has a desktop.ini, if you delete or rename this file, XY will treat Fonts as a normal folder. However I strongly advise that you don't do that.

Ok, so, I think with "a manual refresh mode" you mean "a frozen mode" and "affects" then means "freezes". So that line could then also read:
"Basically, a frozen mode that also freezes the colums data when it would normally be updated (so that it does not get updated until I manually refresh everything)."
Hope I understood that line now.

But the number and name (on rename) of list items (new/deleted items to/in the list) should still be updated, right?, even if save/copy/delete/rename is done by 3rd party software?
So it is exactly NOT like suspending auto-refresh.
I understood it to be a column-only freeze mode (all columns - that's ok - except the name column).

I have a bunch of folders with custom columns that always take their time to stroll in. Would be nice to "ghost freeze" those guys.
