Bingo - Finally I am able to reproduce it each and every time for at least one scenario:
It always - without fail - happens right after adding a drive while XY stays open. Irrespective of any auto-refresh settings like "Include removable drives (Refresh, Icons, History - Auto-Refresh)"

Won't matter if I mount a volume - even dismount it :!: - or if I (un)plug any USB stick, or fire up a TrueCrypt drive - XY will lose it's label colors the minute a drive is added or removed. On XP, Vista, Win7.

Since I do this quite a lot, I've been suffering so intensely from this bug. For some strange reason, however, it was fixed for a while, until half a year ago it returned with some update.

So anyway, I hope this helps to track it down, or at least leads the way to what ini-settings might be causing this that are not present in a fresh; run

Tried it, no such problem here. Unbingo. :|

Whoa, UN-plugging the stick causes the issue! BINGO!

Hard to track, a bit volatile. I changed a little thing and now I cannot reproduce it anymore. So *maybe* that fixed it, but I would not bet on it.

I'll take whatever I can get.

Yes, that's the one common denominator of all reports. I guess I am an exception because of my ever-changing environment.

Ed:
Not sure if 15.50.0208 is supposed to already contain the fix. Anyhow, not working (yet). I hope you don't give up on this, hard as it may be to track it down. I really spoiled labels for me.

Not sure if this helps: Could it be contingent upon ...
  • having labels sitting on drive letters that come up with different hardware/ mounted volumes, so that in some cases the labeled paths may not be valid
  • drive letters like this ?:\SomeStuff\More|8|||||||
  • a weird combination of the above in conjunction with certain auto-refresh settings and other TB-related customizations that keep the bug from surfacing in fresh; instances

Oh, I did not see this EDIT. The forum does not notify about later edits. So it's often better to write a new post than edit an old one.

Too bad it did not fix it. I will try again...

Well, no luck. Since the recent fix the phenomenon is not reproducible anymore on my system.

Tnx.
Also for letting me know about Edit. An old quirk of mine, allowing my fingers to take off on their own. Then later, when the brain catches up, going back to hit Edit.

What you're saying? No chance to track this down?
If I could I would rather trade in portable device and get my labels back. Portable Devices support must have turned the tide, or so it seems to me, when the labels went under for good.

Been racking my brain - if you just give me a refresh command that brings back my label swatches, then I could re-create a button with these left and right clicks:

Code: Select all

"Labels Set" #2222;
  button labels, 2;
"Labels Search" #2222;
   button "findlabel",2;
I could live with that. No need to squash the bug. We just out-run it every time.
Restarting XY every 10 minutes is just not an option for me. It led to my complaints about XY's slow thumb creation, just to give you an idea of my desperate coping attempts. It's frustrating to wait each time for a minute or two.

Plugin/out of USB drive is still what's causing it?

Any change of drive letters causes it.
No matter whether it's physical hardware or mounted volumes of any kind. Each and every time a drive letter is added or removed - bam- the labels are gone. Before I even go there to use the labels, just by mounting an iso-file in the background, not yet showing it in XY, the labels disappear.

Well, here's a reason why Don might not see the bug.
Mounted an ISO and immediately expanded the labels dropdown to find blanks. But clicked again straightaway, and this time they'd went back to normal.
For some reason, Stef gets stuck in that intermediate state.

Oh yes, stuck I am, big time. The labels never come back on in the same session, it always takes a restart, and 10 min into the new session I am stuck again.

I had tried repeated clicks in varying speeds and frequence, and just did so again, but unlike in your case I never get to see them once they're gone. Thanks for participating in the bug hunt, Sammay :bug:

You also get the bug if you toggle CFI (Custom File Icons) on/off?

Stef123

Yes, same problem. CFI makes no difference, I just tried by disabling it completely, via Configuration > Refresh, Icons, History > Icons > Enable custom file icons
