RSS feed from Beta release posts to forum?

Post by j_c_hallgren »

Had this idea while listening to a TWIT podcast that talked about RSS while driving today...when there's a new beta vers, I most always have to: 1) Click to open that sub-forum 2) Click to open last page of thread 3) page down or similar to get to last entry

So was wondering: Could a copy of posting to beta thread be adapted into a RSS feed, (possibly using FeedBurner.com to help), so that folks who want to keep ultimately current, could be notified easily that new vers is available? And the XML file could thus also be keep as a "Favorite"/bookmark so it could be viewed by those who don't use a feed reader, but would still keep a consistent place to look...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

One option is to subscribe to the thread via the "Watch this topic for replies" button on the bottom left.

And there's always Website Watcher -- I use it for all my RSS disabled and enabled websites.

I did subscribe to the beta thread after posting above. You still have to come to the forum as the alert just says there's a new post but doesn't give the content.

 I think I've created my OWN solution to this via the new blog! Only thing is: I'm the one who is currently updating it, so I can't benefit from it!

Did you know that from the Forum Index page you can get to the very most recent post for each forum directly? All you need to do is to click on the little "piece of paper" icon on the far right. Using this trick, you can jump right to the most recent post in the beta forum directly from the forum list...

I hope this helps!

 I'd tried that a handful of times and sometimes it didn't seem to get me to correct entry so I gave up on it, and then forgot about it!

Yes, and you can even have all posts from a topic listed in reverse/descending order, thus having the latest beta version's history displayed first. The link to get such results would simply be this: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... sc&start=0

And there are actually a few services that let's you create your own RSS feeds for sites that don't support them directly. Surely I don't know them all, but I tested a few and in my opinion the best would be feed43 (pronounce feed-for-free), and here's the feed the the link above, listing the latest bit of history for the most recent betas, giving nothing but the history bit and linking directly to the ZIP file of the Install package : http://feed43.com/3435285702121830.xml

That feed43 looks pretty good! It has some advantages over the blog method, but using blog allows one to have other info/news there also...
So now what should we do? I'm thinking of adding those download links somewhere on blog based on what you've shown for now...
