I want to use XYplorer as a library cataloging program
Re: I want to use XYplorer as a library cataloging program
$tagfile value?
You are running at least v15.50?
If yes, start XYplorer.
Use: Menu - File - Save Settings
enter: goto <xydata>;
into the addressbar and hit enter.
Open the XYplorer.ini file in that folder with a text editor of your choice.
Search for "TagsFindPartialMatch" (no quotes!)
If you can find it, exit XYplorer, adjust the value for TagsFindPartialMatch to whatever you like (1, or 2)
save the XYplorer.ini file.
Start XYplorer again.

Re: I want to use XYplorer as a library cataloging program
You never can add a tweak!
You have to use a version of XY supporting the tweak, and then save settings.
After this you can modify it.

Didn't see highends reply

I had posted already this. It's short and clear IMO:

And that was after you've posted the link...Hi Don - I don't see the $tagfile value in the existing configuration file. Should I just add the tweak code to the beginning or to the ending?

But maybe you should change the sequence a bit?
- first add a point with the IMPORTANT:
- then explain how to
Some people read until they know how to, but don't continue. They might even stop after seeing "text editor" - so they don't even notice IMPORTANT:
So first:
- IMPORTANT: Do not create the key but look it up and edit its value. If it doesn't exist your version doesn't support it yet!

Wedging in my opinion - yes, better.
And for the record, I also had problems with those tweaks. Don't know if that link already existed a year ago. I also added the "missing" lines, because that's what you do in most other software when it comes to ini-tweaks, usually in a separate user.ini
What also threw me off several times, even later on: all my comments to those tweaks disappeared. Which made me wonder - more than once - whether or not my ini-changes would still be in effect. Very confusing since comments obviously are allowed, you see them all over in the ini, and when you don't see your changes it triggers questions like "did I really edit the ini-file I have in use? Did I accidentally restore an old backkup?"
You might want to add another hint that comments will be overwritten, but changed values will be kept.

Re: I want to use XYplorer as a library cataloging program
Better? Yes!
(And in general this should be sufficient.)
But I thought of also changing the sequence: move the IMPORTANT chapter in front of the first point explaining how to change it. People just read top to down - and often stopreading - thinking they know enough
And yes, the hint: Unknown / not yet known settings will be deleted on next "save". could help, too.
Re: I want to use XYplorer as a library cataloging program
Patience has never been one of my primary virtues... I think we all pressure Don too much to give us instant gratification with codes, tweaks, and fixes. Perhaps if we all simply waited for the next release (which will contain the changes for which we have all lobbied), the result would be better for all involved? We all know that Don can do it. He has said he will do it. Let's wait and give him a chance to DO IT!

He's already done so, latest beta is released already^^He has said he will do it. Let's wait and give him a chance to DO IT!

Re: I want to use XYplorer as a library cataloging program
Hi Don,
Just as FYI: I downloaded the 15.5 beta and input tags as follows:
Surnames, Jewish—Lists and Histories;
Jewish Identity
The program still appears to be breaking up the tags by comma. It does this with the two tags after entering:
Jewish Identity, Jewish—Lists and Histories;, Surnames
Would it be possible to number the tags manually, as:
1. Surnames, Jewish—Lists and Histories;
2. Jewish Identity
This is a standard library science way of entering tags/subject headings.

At this point let me humbly suggest you re-read the whole thread carefully. (Tip: I did a LOT just for you, and it's all DONE in the recent beta.)
Off to spend some of my time for other users' wishes,
Don

Hi Don - I am extremely grateful for everything you have done. I am very much a novice at scripting/coding, so I will re-read the thread and try to understand what I am missing.admin wrote:At this point let me humbly suggest you re-read the whole thread carefully. Make sure you also read or re-read the links provided. It's not about scripting or coding at all.Ryan wrote: I am very much a novice at scripting/coding, so I will re-read the thread and try to understand what I am missing.
Re: I want to use XYplorer as a library cataloging program
Would someone be willing to just tell me the procedure? There are about 40 messages here for me to try to sift through. If it's such a simple process, it would seem that explaining it would be equally simple.Stef123 wrote:Make sure you also read or re-read the links provided.
