Where is my layout?

Post by Magic »

Hi all,

from out of nowhere my layout went back to its original state?
What's up with that?

I can't seem to locate any old config-file that brings back my layout the way I created it....
Please don't tell me I have to start over again??

Edit: no way.... all my userbuttons als also gone! WTF happened??

did you save settings after setting up your layout and buttons?

Do you have multiple XYplorer installations?

Yeah I saved the settings. (a long time ago) tried to load them but nothing happens, even my tabsets are gone. Man..... I have really no clue how this has happened.
No multiple installations also, I'm baffled....

Open XYplorer, Open Menu > Help > Various Information, post displayed text here. (the opened dialog should have a Copy button)

Open XYplorer Data path (enter <xydata> in the addressbar of XY), backup XYplorer.ini. Now see if there's an Autobackup folder. if there is, copy XYplorer.inis from it's subfolders into <xydata>, and restart XY WITHOUT SAVING. Repeat until: you get all/parts of your setup back, or AUtobackup's ini supply is exhausted.

Well........... I had it back to the way I wanted it.... XY chrashed/did not respond and guess what... bam! Back to the original layout! :blackstorm:

Edit: copy/pasted some ini files from the auto backupfolder.... not the layout I created yesterday. What's the point of saving/backup if it doesn't work? (in my case at least)
I do have a lifetime license but I'm gonna try some different explorers, for now I'm done with XY.

That's good news (the first part is) :D

Since your settings are back, there's very little chance XY will suddenly revert all by itself.

I think you inadvertently did something to make XYplorer load fresh settings or load another ini file.

btw, give XYplorer another chance. You'll be hard-pressed to find another software matching XYplorer's excellence.

Sammay,

I know XY's excellence, that's why I choose it in the first place ;)

In the few years I'm using this software it crashed once in a while but it never revered to the original layout, so I have no clue why this is happening all of a sudden.

Which ini files should I backup separately to avoid this? Looks like the autobackup somehow doesn't do the trick.

Edit: in the autobackup folder there are 5 ini files:
XYplorer-01-01 12/6/15
XYplorer-01-02 12/6/15
XYplorer-01-02-01 13/6/15
XYplorer-02 12/6/15
XYplorer-02-01 14/6/15

What do all those numbers mean? I know the 14/6/15 is the wrong one, but loading all the others (which should be my old layout) does nothing. Well it does something, it changes the layout but not the one I created ;)

"What do all those numbers mean?" - I'm no expert in Autobackup filenames scheme, but you should backup <xydata>\xyplorer.ini* to safekeep most of the settings, including layout and custom buttons. (<xydata> is the parent of Autobackup and the root of your XYplorer profile)

Other important files in <xydata>:

Code: Select all

action.dat action log (undo/redo records)
fvs.dat folder view settings
ks.dat keyboard shortcuts
tag.dat tags
udc.dat user-defined commands (Menu > User items)
pv.dat permanent variables
* enter this in the addressbar of XY:

Code: Select all

echo <xyini>;
if it returns some other filename instead of xyplorer.ini, then thats wher your settings are saved, and you shuld backup that instead. However, it's better to save settings in XYplorer.ini (File > Settings special > Save config as...)

Thanks for all the info and tips SammaySarkar!

I created the layout I wanted (again  ), and copy/pasted all the files you mentioned to another drive.
As a test I changed the layout a bit, saved it, restarted XY and saw the new layout. Copy/pasted the backupfiles to the main XY folder and to my relief I saw my created layout I wanted!

Problem solved I guess, still guessing why it happened in the first place........

Cheers for now!

do you happen to have multiple ini files in <xydata> with names like xyplorer-*.ini?

Yes, the ones I mentioned in an earlier post. (With all those numbers behind, no idea what those mean....)

No, you said they were in the Autobackup folder. if such files were already there before you copied them from autobackup\, then this could very well be the reason of the sudden-reversion, because XY somehow must've been made to load one of those files (from scratch).

Anyways, the one thing that matters is that everything's OK now! :)

right!

To be clear: they are also in the normal folder, don't now where they are coming from though.
But everything is fine, I made the final tweaks and I made a backup of all the files.

So I should be safe might something happen ;)
