Drop "Enable shell thumbnails"

Post by admin »

This setting: Configuration | Thumbnails | Enable shell thumbnails

1) Does a newbie understand this? No.

2) Does anybody ever disable this? Unlikely.

Conclusion: I should remove the setting, make it the factory default, and keep it as a tweak!

Speak now if you object! :ninja:

I disabled this long-long time ago because I don't want to create thumbnail for Video/Office/HTML... files (waste resource). I just need thumbnail for images.
I'm a casual coder using AHK language. All of my xys scripts:

Same here. Disabled because I've got my folder.jpgs spread all over the place. And for the files themselves, I usually generate my own thumbs cache, or hand it over to some 3rd party tool.

Hm, ok. What about a new caption "Show thumbnails for non-images"?

sorry, but what's the reason behind this name change?
The old name was fitting, it said exactly what the option would do. This new name introduces some ambiguity (and can also be slightly misleading).

There can be many exotic image formats that only shell can generate thumbs of, but XY with its methods cannot. he help files itself (therefore the Dev) supports this:
help for this setting wrote:Tick this option to use your Shell's capabilities, and you will get thumbnails for [...] all sorts of image formats (many of which are already done by XYplorer's internal thumbnails/preview). With the appropriate CODECs installed ticking this option enables XYplorer to show thumbnails of RAW image formats (e.g. CRW, DNG, NEF).
So unticking this options can stop XY from showing thumbs for some those "all sorts of image formats", yet the caption is "Show thumbs for NON-images".

Are all image thumbs now always generated by XY regardless of this setting? what if somebody has a problem like this -- the problem is with thumbnails of photos -- yet we advise them to toggle a setting which seemingly has no relation to images ?

My guess on Don's take:
- most "today's" people have no idea about the or a shell-concept - and don't have to know
- most "today's" people simply want to see as much 'graphic symbols' as possible - the more aout-of-the-box the better
- only "old fashioned and educated" IT-people like you ( ) care for those details

-> "downgrade" to a tweak.

Cheers,

I'm open for a better name. But the old name is simply not intelligible for today's users.

PS: Maybe it would even make sense to split the setting:
- Show thumbnails for non-images
- Show thumbnails for RAW images
