Upgrading from the free version 5 ?
I have been running the free version for many years and I love it. I think it may be time to buy a license. Any problem updating from v.5.55.0000 to the most current version?

Re: Upgrading from the free version?
Usually upgrading XY doesn't create any problems but you're planning to take a big leap by upgrading from v5.55 to v15.00 which probably equals to 6-7 years of development and I guess about 2000 beta versions between those two.
So I assume nobody else has tried that specific upgrade before, which means no guarantees but we're usually quite helpful around here to solve specific problems you might encounter.
In any case make a backup of your old XY directory before upgrading.
And it might take you a while to discover the new XY since there has been so much going on around here.
Good luck.

Re: Upgrading from the free version?
Ralph....
Thanks for your response. I guess it would help me to know if xyplorer still uses an ini file for settings, etc. and, if so, can it be copied over to a new installation? My installation of v5.55 is a little unusual.
Thanks again.
Bert

Re: Upgrading from the free version?
For sure XY is still using .ini files for settings.
But as RalphM I don't know how compatibel they are
- over this very long time and number of versions
- between free and paid version.
Especially I know that even name and section of some settings were changed somewhen!
But you can test it:
- download the latest XY as .zip version
- extract to any new created folder
- start the extracted XYplorer.exe, then save settings and terminate
- now in AppData subfolder of the install folder all settings are created, including XYplorer.ini
- play with it
Edit:
or, after extracting and before starting XYplorer, you can copy your current AppData (wherever its located, see Help/Various Information) into the new extraction folder.
You can do this multiple, either delete all and re-extract, or parallel in multiple folders.
Then: see what happens. After first start and save of settings XY will (try to) migrate all copied settings. Maybe something will be lost...
...but: your original shouldn't be touched in any way!

Wow, upgrade from 5 to 15! I'd like to know how it worked. All I can say: It should work.

Just to verify: Free to Licensed should work, too?

Yes, I think so. Overwrite the exe and run it.PeterH wrote:Just to verify: Free to Licensed should work, too?

Re: Upgrading from the free version 5 ?
I promised to post the results of the attempted update, so here they are:
I downloaded and installed v. 15. I then copied xyplorerfree.ini from the v. 5 folder to the data folder of v. 15. I renamed the ini file to xyplorer.ini. When I started v. 15 it loaded without problem and the configuration was nearly identical to what I had set up in v. 5. A little tweaking and v. 15 is perfect.
I have to say that I'm very impressed. Kudos to XYplorer developers for a superb job. And thanks to all who responded to my post asking for help.
