XY won’t let go

Post by JohnM »

I’m not sure if this an XY or Windows thing, but…

When I plug in my new USB HDD (a WD 60Gb job) I get the usual autoplay dialog (which I cancel) and then I access it in XY (usually via an entry in the catalog) as drive G:, XY doesn’t seem to want to let go of the drive when it comes time to unplug it. :(

I access it in XY (copy files, whatever) and when I’m finished I click the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the tray and select drive G:. Windows says that an application is using the drive and I can not safely remove the device. In XY the drive does not appear in any tabs but Sysinternals’ Process Explorer 10.21 says that XY has a file handle pointing to ”G:”.

When I try to close the handle (again using Process Explorer), PE says that the handle is invalid and that it can’t be closed. Of course I can just rip the USB plug out, but that’s not the point.

After a little bit of mucking about, it appears that the dodgy handle appears after XY updates it’s catalog icons to reflect the fact the drive was plugged in.

Thoughts?
Cheers
JohnM

Update: ok I must be going nuts. It's behaving itself and not doing it now. All I have done is unplugged it a couple of times. Weird. :?

In my case I have to either close the tab in which i was acessing the removable drive or have to change the tab to different path or close XY. Otherwise i cannot remove the device safely.

This is either from Previewing/RawViewing a file, or from Auto-Refresh ON (which sets a hook to the current path).

Hm, I'm currently not aware of any "Query Remove Hardware" Windows message, but there should be one... needs some research.

Before I find out, your workaround is to stop any preview, and/or change the path away from the drive to be removed, or turn off autorefresh.
