XY seems like a really good product and I may well end up buying it. But it could do a much better job of pre-sales information.
You discovered this pre-purchase, so it seems the trial and free edition do work!

Baloney. Explorer, with all its warts, is the standard that all users are used to. If you are going to write a replacement, it needs to do whatever it is that the thing it is replacing does. And if it can't, it better disclose that. This type of compatibility issue comes up all the time in all kinds of products. It's either compatible or it isn't.

You do like to twist things, don't you. I never said XY had to "hunt down every extension". I said it needs to disclose incompatibilities it knows about. It knew about this one long ago.

Exactly. I discovered it. XY already knew about it and chose not to disclose it.

I'm done. You can have the last word.

I'm done.
Something I can finally agree with

The good thing is: there are so many alternatives which all support all shell extensions regardless if they follow the ms guidelines...

Again XYplorer fully supports properly developed context menu extensions - just like Explorer.

The problem is and always has been that certain extensions check which program is calling them and where they are running then refuse to work in anything other than Explorer. It's nothing that Explorer or XYplorer are doing it is entirely these extensions and that's their choice.

You even verified this yourself (emphasis mine):
Cynthia Moore wrote:I've checked with several other file managers. It looks like none of them are able to get the Carbonite right-click menu extensions to work. So it appears that Carbonite is either intentionally making this only work with WE or they have inept programmers and just don't give a damn. Based on a number of "features" in their UI, I'm voting for the latter.

If I get up the energy, I might send a complaint to Carbonite, but they have not been responsive in the past and their UI has been getting worse and worse for several years.
And I really do hope you have complained to them because unlike XY they don't seem to have a forum accessible to potential customers - one must pay to complain.

I cannot find evidence of either of these statements.

You brought up the issue and some members of the XY community did some searching and discovered that Carbonite documents that aspects of their program cannot work outside of Windows Explorer. Another member elaborated that this is similar to a poorly developed extension from another company.

At best it was known that a user had problems with Carbonite's overlay icons but it was never fully investigated or discovered what the actual problem was and with overlay icons there's always two more likely culprits than the extension limiting itself to Explorer. Further, the extension which controls overlay icons is different from that which provides the context menu.

There isn't some conspiracy where this has been known about and covered up for years. In fact the limited mentions of Carbonite around here show that there doesn't appear to be much overlap in customers.

Good luck finding a better file manager!

And what about off-site? If you don't have at least ONE copy of data somewhere else (under your control), you don't have proper backup!
My personal data (and all the data that I preserve for my customers) won't fall into somebody's else hands.
But - if you don't have off-site backup, you data is vunerable to natural disasters -- fire/flood/tornado/etc -- whatever may apply to your location -- doesn't have to be elaborate -- keep a drive at work/parent's home/ bank safe deposit box/etc...

I've heard way too many stories from callers to The Tech Guy show cry about losing all their pix in house fire or such...even a week old backup is better than nothing!
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

A backup that is impervious to any faults! Heaven knows there's nothing more reliable on Earth than leaving valuable property at an SO's apartment. :)

Talk about reviving an old thread :P

On a side note, and correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't she have just added the following PFA to be able to right click to open any folder in WE:

Code: Select all

"Open in Windows Explorer" \>"c:\windows\explorer.exe"
