Preview of video shows only an image

Hello,

I just reinstalled Windows 7 again, but this time there was a surprise when I tried to use XYplorer's preview feature for videos. Instead of seeing the video play as it always has in the past, I get a static image and a message saying that the preview image was created by the shell. (What shell? System or XYplorer?) I have fiddled and twiddled with configuration settings, but nothing helps so far.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Did you use any video player software, that installs codecs / a codec pack (e.g. k-lite)?

I get the same message on a Win 7 x86 VM but after installing k-lite the full playback works immediately (even without restarting XY).
