Catalogs or favorites?

Post by surrender »

I actually ask this question quite often to myself.

How many of us who use catalog use favorites??

After catalog came I have almost forgotten favorite folders and favorite files thing. The only time i used was to import all of those into catalog and have forgotten it. Simply because catalog is way better than the former ones.

Favorites has few advantages like,
1. it can be accessed with catalog panel OFF, and
2. you can make tree items bold.

But these two can be easily overcome by,
1. including catalog in the menu and remove favorites, and
2. assigning the Bold feature independent of favorites, like in highlight folder and box branch.

Well, I do! I use both of them every day, even though I'll admit that I don't think I ever used Favorite Files ever since the Catalog. But Fav Folders I still do, a lot.

As you said Fav Folders allow some visual aid in Tree (bold and/or ico overlay) but also are available in one click through the Tree's ctxt menu.

That said, Fav.Folders are actually as much powerfull as Catalog items are, meaning they're not actually restricted to folders, but can be URLs, file:/// type, VF, Name Searches, etc

This led to me think maybe there could be a better way to work with all this, for example indeed maybe why not have indeed the Catalog on the Tree's ctxt menu, having items from one "default" category (eg. named "Favorite Folders") listed, plus submenus for each other categories.
So on the right click you'd get like:

Item 1 on "Favorite Folders" Catalog category
Item 2 on "Favorite Folders" Catalog category
Item 3 on "Favorite Folders" Catalog category
etc
-
Another Catalog catagory (submenu, listing category items)
Yet another Catalog catagory (submenu, listing category items)
etc

It could be a nice thing, but there's still a problem, the bold/icon overlay on Tree. Besides, there's actually a major difference between the two: Catalog is a global/shared among all configurations (INI files) thing, while Favorites are INI-specific.

Although, a solution could be that the name of the Catalog's "default" category would be saved into the INI file. Hence we're back on a INI-basis feature, and that "default" category on Catalog would mean:
- have its items listed on Tree's ctxt menu (not a submenu like others)
- have its item pointing to folders showed on Tree with bold/icon overlay (according to INI's setting, menu View/Tree Style)
- have its item used by Move/Copy/Backup To feature

Interesting thoughts jacky! The right click context for catalog categories sounds good to me. And regarding the bold /icon overlay, it can maybe go to view along with highlight tree and box branch since these three are visual things really. Whatever the end effect is, we all need to re-assess XY for any redundancy and make it more intuitive and more simple and XY is nearly close to it.
