A drag-and-drop feature

Post by DongGook Park »

I've just found that a trivial-looking feature is missing in XY. In Windows Explorer, we can drag and drop a file A onto a zip file B, which is not allowed in XY.

It is not that trivial. I never found out how to do it. Most other file manager makers do not have this problem because they use MS controls with built in drop support. XY, however, is almost completely hand-made and hence its power is only limited by my powers -- as in this case! So I have to admit that what you mentioned currently looks like a price you pay for all the goodies in XY.

I've got WinZip which adds a series of entries to Context Menu so I just right-click on file and add it that way...I'm sure other zip products have similar ways to do it...and drag-drop is a bit harder with touchpad so I just don't bother with it...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Another Free ZIP Program

Post by Buttonpusher »

I have been testing XY and really appreciate it's unique features, reasonable price, and licensing. I considered Opus, but it just is not worth the cost and learning curve. My long time favorite Powerdesk has been passed around to many new owners, loosing any dedication to upkeep and refinement and is unstable in XP.

I have loaded ALZip from: http://www.altools.net/Home/tabid/36/Default.aspx
Free to non comercial users...

I would definately pay more for the built in ZIP support though, since I use ZIP in my daily job as a CAD designer.

I'd say that at least once, if not twice a month we get a request for ZIP support in XY. Surely this must be creeping up your list Don?

zip support? That's not the issue here!

The problem is XY does not support a feature with regard to D&D. Although not natural at all, if you D&D a pdf file onto Acrobat.exe then what will be the result? The pdf file opens! That's what happens in Windows explorer and some other explorers, but not in XY.

Usually, the lack is no problem. But when it comes to zip or other type of compressed file, it's a bit annoying.

If I would see a programmatic way to find out the command line syntax for adding a file(s) to a zip, then it would be easy to do... but up to now I did not see it.

Great! Thanks, Don.

And, I found that the left D&D of a file into a blank space in the list window evokes Ctrl-S behaviour. I like that side effect (I suppose so) as well.

Now, if you can that with .7z and .rar, that would be extra super good. :)

Yeah, I agree with John Bee, if you could have it to work with everything that supports it (eg rar, exe, etc) and allow the use of Shift to move files as well, would really be awesome! :)

And the feature on blank area to make a copy is pretty nice, but really should work only if Ctrl is pressed, otherwise we should have the "not allowed" icon. Cause right now you start a drag and then realized you took the wrong file, or missed one on a multi selection, well you gotta find a drop zone that doesn't allow it to cancel! :?

Dragging file onto zip file doesnt work for me. I get an error "Shelldrop failed (IdrpTrgt Is Nothing)".

Update: The problem is only in the list, Drag&Drop in catalog works fine, i.e. opens zip program.

The "the feature on blank area" was just a new bug...

You always can abort a drag operation by ESC.

Move? You mean add to a Zip and then delete?
