Yes, but more out of curiosity. My private files bear descriptive names, it's on foreign machines where the preview would come in handy, but not when I have to tweak registries first. It doesn't help, anyway. Seems like Don is right and some other pdf tool overrides this setting upon reboot.

What do you mean by "Preview pane"? The lower info panel? That works here, too. But do you also get to see the preview on mouse-down blow up? If so, do you have third party stuff installed like AbiWord or OpenOffice?

Wasn't paying close attention before--Have determined that "Word 97-2003 (*.doc)" format files work in MDBU; "Word Document (*.docx)" (2010) format files don't work in MDBU. Both work in panel. Seems weird as only Office 2010 is installed. Excel file saved back to earlier format works in MDBU but preview panel still prompts to open or save. The Office MDBU previews that work are just text, so Excel pretty hard to make sense of in any case. Stupid Office... Just installed Libre Office to see how that might impact Office file preview--no apparent effect, regardless of who set for default file open. Can't even preview native Libre Office formats--"failed to load ifilter.." on MDBU and prompt to open or save in panel.

OK, I will remove MDBU/Text for Office files. Too many users have MS Office and it won't work for them.

 :?:
The text extraction works perfectly fine over here with Office 2013!!

Please, make the removal somehow optional.

Thanks, FH

8.1 Pro

Just to make clear: We're not talking about Preview in Office format, but preview of textual information extracted from Office files, right? Though I see slight differences depending on the e.g. individual excel format (see screen examples), extraction and preview works.

Let me know how I can provide further support.

Code: Select all

MDBUonTextOffice=1
works even with Non-Open Office.

Code: Select all

    * Mouse Down Blow Up of Text: Removed the feature for Office files. Too many
users have MS Office and it won't work for them because MS Office does not
install 32-bit IFilters on 64-bit Windows.
Where can I look to explicitly verify those filters indeed have been installed on my system?

Dunno. And don't understand why it works for you and not for others. Bloody mess.

So this seems to work on some systems but not on others. Did I mention what I think of MS Office?

There seems to be some kind of conspiracy going on, a mutual symbiosis between MS and the customizing/ consulting lobby (which has also been feeding me nicely over the years, so I won't complain): Companies shell out fortunes to make their SAP and MS workable and useable. Then, with workflows stuck on macros and adaptions that won't with run with other alternatives, MS benefits again from their own inadequacies. A self-perpetuating money machine.

One thing to say in favor of the MS Office quasi-standard: It ended the garbled mess of file conversions between AmiPro and WordPerfect etc in the 90s.
