Q about migrating XY from Win XP to Win 7

Post by glnz »

This FAQ explains how to migrate my existing XY from Win XP to Win 7:

http://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=migrate

BUT - a Question:

My current home PC is Win XP Pro SP3. Some time in the next 6 weeks, I shall install Win 7. (Will be a lot of work.)
Today, many of the XY app data files in
C:\Documents and Settings\Irving Admin\Application Data\XYplorer
reflect my current arrangement of tabs and source data folders in XYPlorer and point to where my data folders can be found in XP.
When I upgrade my PC to Win 7, those data folders will move to different locations in Win 7.
So, when I run XYPlorer for the first time in Win 7, the XY tabs will not be able to find the data folders.
Will I be able to point the XYPlorer tabs to the new folder locations, or will XYPlorer just crash and freeze?
(My XYPlorer is a version 10.80.0200 from Giveaway of the Day on Feb 6, 2012.)

Thanks.

I don't see any danger there. I myself just migrated my XY from XP to Win8.1 without any problems.

Follow-up question:

When I install Win 7, I'll be creating three user accounts on the PC for the first time - two Administrators and one Standard User.

How do I migrate (not re-install) my existing XY into Win 7 so that each user will create and see only his selection of tabs and settings, not mine as initial Administrator?

Yes, I do want the Standard User to be able to use XY and to create and see his own settings for it.

Knowing nothing at all about Win 7, it might be that you show me how to do two things in Win 7:
1) Right now, in the Program Files/XYplorer folder, the file Startup.ini says

Code: Select all

[Appdata]
Path=%appdata%\XYplorer
Maybe you will give me the equivalent of this in Win 7, and in Win 7 I will change this code to what you give me so that it points generically and automatically to the SEPARATE %appdata% folder for EACH user - that is, whichever user is operating the Win 7 PC and has launched XY.
2) Then, in the Win 7 equivalent of the %appdata% folder for EACH user, I paste in a copy of my current existing folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Irving Admin\Application Data\XYplorer.
Over time, those three separate app folders get modified differently as each Win 7 user uses XY differently. BUT - where do I paste this in Win 7?

Of course, I could be completely wrong about the above.

I miss XP already.

Thanks again.

You don't have to change anything in startup.ini.
Each user's XYplorer settings will be saved in their own AppData folder.

If you need to find the folders themselves, that will be:

Code: Select all

C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\Roaming\
paste your "XYplorer" folder here for each user and you're good to go.

admin and Sammay:

I'm still learning Win 7 Pro. So two questions:

First question:
Today, I will be installing XYp on two Win 7 Pro machines, each with three users (two admins and one standard).
I will open my admin user and do the install. That's it.
Then, will the three users on that machine each be able to use XYp?
As each of them uses and customizes XYp, does his customizations "stick" just for him (not the same as the other users)? That's what I want.
Or do I need to install in a different way?

Second question:
It's good to start XYp with a keyboard shortcut - I like CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+X.
On Win 7 Pro, how do I do that?

Thanks.

First answer: yes, but use the installer version of XYplorer. (Do NOT use the portable zip or rar archives*)
All users will have their own, separate, non-conflicting, XYplorer profile.

Second answer: make a shortcut to xyplorer and set a hotkey in shortcut properties.

*actually you can "install" the portable xy package for multiple users. In that case, you need to create a startup.ini file in the same location as xyplorer.exe, with the following content:

Code: Select all

[Appdata]
Path=%appdata%\XYplorer
but, using the installer version is simpler.[/size]

Sammay - thanks for clear info

That shortcut with its hotkey - where can I put that shortcut? In Win XP Pro, I had to put the shortcut on the desktop - the hotkey would not work otherwise. Same requirement in Win 7 Pro?

In Win 7 Pro, if it must be on the desktop, then must the shortcut be on all three desktops (three users per machine)?

Sorry for dumb questions, but I'm still a novice with Win 7 and multiple users.
