multiple instance issue?

I just bought the software, and it seems that after I entered my key and restarted the program, all hell broke loose.

the folder settings/columns were all reset and now there are multiple instances coming up no matter what I do.

any way to get single instance/single tab in each pane; have new folders opened up via shortcuts to come up in the active pane?

UPDATE: err, I think I found this has something to do with privatizing the configuration per instance setting
