Custom Tab Icons won't work

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum ... been using XYPlorer for some weeks now and I've just spent quite some time trying to get Tab Icons to work.

My problem:
Whenever I select an .ico file for a tab by renaming the tab to "MyTabName|C:\<somepath>\MyIcon.ico", I just see some generic icon associated with the .ico type, not the actual icon I'm referencing.

On the other hand, the following examples from the help file work without a problem and the icon is shown.
xy|<xy>
co|Computer
|:home

I have tried experimenting with the config settings (General => Refresh, Icons, History) to no avail.

Anybody have an idea what's going on here?

Anyways, [a shot in the dark]
Try this:
• View->Cache->Refresh Icon
• If the icons still do not show, then restart XYplorer.

No luck with the cache refresh.

No "alert" icon either - that one only appears with non-existing icon files, which I already found out during my experiments

However, I now seem to remember where the icon I see comes from. It's from my Icon Editor software.
That doesn't seem to make sense, though, because in Windows Explorer icon previews work just fine. Strange indeed

Okay...
Navigate to and select the icon in Xyplorer. Then select File->Preview. Can you tell me which icon sizes are listed in the opened pane?
(Is the icon displayed properly in the file list, especially in list/details view?)

Preview of the file: 16 icons, (4bit/8bit/32bit) x (48x48/32x32/24x24/22x22/16x16) = 15, which are properly displayed in the XY preview
In addition there is a 32bit x 256 x 256 which is not shown in the XY preview, although it says the file contains 16 icons.

All my .ico files are shown as the same "Icon Editor Icon" in XY Details View.
The thumbnail views show the actual icons, details w/ thumbnails shows both.

So XYplorer can't render the icons even in the list view; there must be something special about those icons.
So, if you don't mind, can you upload one of the icons here?
You have to either zip it up, or change the icon extension to xys.

File attached, it is an export of a Favorites icon from some Windows DLL done with IcoFx 2.7

This one displays correctly here. Even as tab icon.
I'll download IcoFX and see what happens.
But, I've to go offline now. Unless someone else comes to your rescue (very likely), we'll resume tomorrow. Seeya.

EDIT: I thought of something: if IcoFX is set up as the default handler of *.ico files, what happens when you reset that? I can't say it has any definite relations to the issue tho'.

Good idea about resetting IcoFX.

I did it this way:
The registry key
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\IcoFX2.exe\DefaultIcon]
was set to display the first icon in the "IcoFX2.exe" binary
I changed its value to "%1" instead and, rather unexpectedly, everything worked....

XYPlorer obviously relies on the mechanisms set up in the registry for file type ".ico" to display customized icons, something I did not expect.
