Copy URL to a Folder?

Post by jlippey »

I can drag a URL from my browser's address bar to a folder in Windows Explorer for most any version of browser and Windows.

When I do that in XY (from IE9 in this case), I get an error: "Failed to get dropped contents of..."

How do I put a URL in a folder?

Hm... that's weird. It should be working but it's not. I think this might be a bug. It seems to work for everything else like dragging pictures and stuff...

I confirm it does not work at all from IE 11 / Win8. XY does not even note that anything is being dropped. (Many other apps I have do not note it either.)

But it works fine from Firefox.

From my test on a Win 7 system, Chrome failed with an XYplorer error "Drop failed". Firefox 30.0 created a text file with the URL link. It should instead be making a URL file just like Windows Explorer. Opera 12.17 failed with XYplorer message "Nothing to drop".

Here (Win 8.1) Firefox 30 and Chrome 35 work identical in XY and WE. I don't have Opera.

Very weird. So it behaves as expected on Windows 8 but not Windows 7? I tried it on 2 of my Win 7 installation and they don't work as expected. Only dragging to Explorer makes it work as expected.

Note that "text file with the URL link" (with URL extension) is the correct behavior. What else do you expect?

When dragging any links from Chrome to Windows Explorer on Win 7, a *.url file is created with the URL to that site. That is what the normal behavior on Windows 7 and (Win XP if I remembered correctly) have always been like.

EDIT: Firefox is a bit odd it seems. It does not really support dragging URL directly from the address bar to anywhere. It does allow drag and drop of links and content on webpages.

EDIT2: Oh. Ignore the line "It should instead be making a URL file just like Windows Explorer" when I was talking about Firefox. Chrome and Opera in my case is the one not behaving with a failed drop.

Firefox:
Dragging from addressbar works, you have to drag the icon in addressbar (a URL is created).
Dragging in-document links also create *.URL shortcuts.
Dragging other files copy that file (probably depends on html).

IE11/W8:
Dragging from the addressbar does not work.
>This action is intended to create a new type of *.website shortcut. (In WE, this action creates a *.website file.) Clicking this opens an IE window exclusive to that website.
>Maybe it will work if XY is made to support this shortcut format? (because the error message explicilty says it can't get the contents of the *.website file)
Dragging in-document elements do not work. ("Nothing to drop")

No, it cannot work with IE11/W8. My app does not even note that anything is being dragged over it.

Very refreshing to read this from a developer for a change. But then again, you're not the kind that responds to similar user statements with "Yeah, right..." :D
