Rename Is *Slightly* Lacking

Post by Nighted »

Sorry about the subject, your program is very nice. But I've got to be honest, when it comes to features for renaming, it's a bit behind the competition.

For example, Windows explorer lets you slow double click a file to rename it, I can't do this in XYplorer.

Also, I can't rename a folder full of files using <parent> or something similar to rename all the files using the folder name as a prefix. This gets very tedious having to type in the prefix every time I move to another folder when I could just be hitting F2 then Enter.

There's another program with a very similar name (and price???) (minus the Y and a numeral between 1 and 3 at the end) that has all this and more as well as many of the features already mentioned in your roadmap. Actually, it's had some of those features for a very long time now.

Anyway, it's a bit behind the competition but I must say in other respects it is evolving very nicely. I especially love how you've set up the features for thumbnails, file attributes and searching...and it's these great features that have piqued my interest that make me want to see it improve in other ways. If it were cheaper I could have both programs for now and still support your work. Whatever happens, I'll be checking the updates and seeing what is new, and when I finally see it can match the others pound for pound, my money will do the talking for me.

Well I gotta say, you sound very objective there :P

Seriously though, first of all, of course XY supports the rename on slow dbl-click. But, because some people might not like it it is actually an option, independant for Tree & List, which you can found in menus:
- View/Tree Style/Rename On Slow Double-Click
- View/List Style/Rename On Slow Double-Click

After that, I honestly think what you said is very unfair. XY renaming features are very powerful. You're right, it does not have a variable or something for the parent folder name, and another soft does.
Yet XY's Batch Rename supports increments, datestamp (for either modified's item date or current date), and the base of the filename.
And XY also allows you to do search&replace, use the power of regexp, automatic changes of case, common conversion, MP3 Specials, and more.

And yes, xplorer2 has dual pane already, right? But XY has a huge lots of excellent, fast, powerful & addictive features that are not in x2 (or any other soft for that matter) And many more (even including DP) are indeed coming!
And the support & reactivity that goes on with XY is very unique, I don't know any other soft with that much quality involved. Obviously everyone is different, and maybe XY isn't made for you, but honestly blaming it on "feature-lacking" like you kinda did is really unfair.

I can only invite you to try XY a bit more, take a look at the wiki to find out more about it (or its rename features) & use it for a while, you'll see it really is the best!

(ps: XY isn't a renaming tool :P ;))

Ok, I don't want to offend and I apologize for not finding the options to toggle the double click renaming feature. I had assumed this feature would be found in the options menu, which I thoroughly checked before posting.

I have only been using XY for about 2 days now. Like I mentioned before, it has some very nice (and addicting features as you've mentioned), it's very fast, and the tab features are much better than that other program.

Forgive me for being blunt before, XY does have some powerful renaming abilities, even if the program is not specifically designed for such a task. I just thought that not being able to rename a folder full of pictures, for example, by using the folder name, is a big omission as it's a very useful and time saving feature to have. I hope you think it would enhance XY in some way.

I admit I'm sometimes biased and quick to judge. I'm very passionate about the software I use every day and I like try to find one program that can accomplish as much as possible without having to use several similar programs to achieve one task. I'm sure you know what I mean, as many of us keep several similar programs that are designed to do the same thing, but there is rarely that one that can do it all (although this is slowly changing with the plethora of new projects on the web).

XY really is beginning to grow on me. It's obvious that a lot of effort goes into it. I do look forward to checking out every new feature and revision that comes fresh out of the compiler.

P.S. I must say also that a speedy and thoughtful reply such as this is also very welcome and definitely makes the product that much more appealing in the end. Thank you.

I'm not offended, sorry if it sounded so. Just honestly thought you were being unfair about XY, and well, being passionate about it myself I may have sounded so a bit.

Regarding the options, no worries no one here expects any new comer (or even long time user) to know it all ;) Actually, some good will come from this, since I think that there should probably be a mention of this & where the options are on the "Rename Special" page on the wiki! Could be indeed useful, especially for new users and such.

And about the folder name on rename, I actually do agree that on some occasions it could be a nice thing indeed. I never really thought about it cause I usually do it the other way around (ie. first I rename files, then create a folder based on the files' names), but yes it should be thought of I think.
As you said in the first post, maybe there could be a <folder> added, that would be replaced by the folder's name. We'll see what others think about it!

Jacky is definitely correct in his statement: "the support & reactivity that goes on with XY is very unique, I don't know any other soft with that much quality involved."

I just looked back at I believe was my first post here...just over a year ago...I was pointed to XY by another msg forum as THE pgrm that would solve the situation I had, which was: Easily finding files that were created in last 15 or so minutes...that is one of the areas that I still find most useful...anyway, I had an issue so posted a "bug" report...figured I might get an answer much later...not so! Had a reply from Don (admin/author) in only a few hours, which impressed me right away! :)

Since then, I started getting more and more involved here...to the point where I just recently became 2nd most frequent poster here on forums...ok, so some of my posts are (in hindsight) not that good; however, lately, it's because some of us users have debated the ways and merits of how we'd expect a new mod or feature to work...and often, within days or a couple of weeks, that feature is available via a beta! :D

Now, can the same be said about the competition? I'm not sure, as I've not used most of them, but I think you'll find the level of both user and author support just about unmatched in this product area...it's likely THE best supported program I've found in YEARS! We've got the wiki...we've got regular forum users in USA, France, Germany, UK, and other places so getting an answer shouldn't take that long due to time zone diffs.. 8)

And there are better changes to come! I'd much rather have a program that I can have some input on how new features are done, than live with what the author(s) or company has decided...part of that is due to fact I was a programmer in the old mainframe days...now, there are times when Don says it's going to be his way, but it's not often...and upon reflection, I generally often agree that he is correct.

So give us a good tryout and you may just become an XY convert too!
Sorry that this got SO long, but I'm just SO hooked on this software and forum! :!:
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Thanks, both of you guys. Those were awesome responses. I'm a software junkie myself (to excess in many cases) and I know exactly where you are both coming from.

I really think I'm going to like this program and if I decide to jump ship, will do my part also to assist in the community.

You guys rock!
