 That's why I didn't follow it! I've got that opt on...I disliked only seeing the top left 1/8th (or whatever) of some huge JPG...now it makes perfect sense, and do agree that would be a logical addition.

I think we might call this a bug, and when the focus is on an "outsider" of the selection, XY should first move focus to the first selected file, then do as now.
Yes, given that Space is only a request to begin playing and should likely not affect selection.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Yes, that's what itsme28m is talking about. That because when you do a multi-selection that way files are being selected but the focus is not changed, so you have the focus on a non-selected file (most likely at first, focus is on the first file in List).

Space has its media-preview related power only when a media file is being previewed (playing or stopped/paused).
To avoid confusion by overloading KSs I would rather choose a new KS for "Start Playing" (and start with the first selected file if the focus is not on a selected file; or maybe better: even start with the first selected file always indep. of focus).
Just wonder which KS that could be...

My thinking is that when you go into a new folder, select a group of files via mouse, and then hit Space, Xy should be able to detect that a media file is selected and then begin playing at first selected file...as I consider that to be a variant of 'stopped' status...so I don't see a need for new KS just to handle this one situation.

Updated with following:
In above example, the user mouse selection of files should, IMO, override the default focus on first as it occurs after the focus. This shouldn't conflict with existing Space to convert a focus item to selected, as no interim mouse action to affect selection has occurred.

Ok, but silly question here: what does Space do, outside of its special media-preview-specific area ?? Give selection to the focused item and only it? It that really any useful that it must be kept?

I believe it is expected behavior. Space is a sacred key like Return/Enter. You don't mess around with it.

Really? Cause in a file manager I have never really associated Space with anything special, and BTW I just tried Explorer, Space doesn't exactly work the same way either: it does select the focused item if it wasn't selected, if it is it does nothing, but unlike in XY it does not loose any current selection.

eg. select A and B and have focus on C, Space on Explorer add C to selection while XY makes C the only selection. So I wonder if it's really a special key (to anyone) ?
And since in XY Ctrl+Up/Down move focus, and Ctrl+Space switch selected state for the focused item, I would say you can use it as you wish...

Aha, interesting!

In this case I was less thinking of Explorer but of the ListView control which is used all over Windows. If Space really does not unselect other selections I will adjust to that. Needs some research...

EDIT: research done. Yes, it seems that Space does select any focused unselected item without changing any other selections, but when the focused item is already selected then Space does nothing (Was it maybe different under Win95?? I'm sure I got this stuff right when I did it years ago...)! So it would indeed be free to start the preview then. :)

I'm not sure...

When I see a dotted focus rect on something not-selected I expect Space to select it (to do the same as clicking on it would do -- e.g. Space does also trigger focused buttons).

Just a very minor thing: on Config window you should enlarge the list a little bit, cause here the "play next and loop" is cutted a little (I can't really see the last "p")

That's what I implied...a right-click would toggle mute on and off...plain, simple, effective..even for me, who doesn't use right-click much!
I just had one of those DUH    moments! Just realized that on my laptop keyboard, my 'End' key has a second special function when used with the "Fn" key: Mute on/off! And that my Page up/dn adjust master vol also in same manner...I use those FN+ keys SO rarely that I'd almost forgotten about them...but...I still think a mute within XY is a good idea!

Auto next?

Post by itsme28m »

Hi,

i thought that the problem of the auto next function when you select multiple files would be solved in the next beta but because it isn't i'm putting a message for this in here :P

So, the auto next is almost perfect, but not with multiple files selected and the focused item.

However, i did find a nice workaround for myself when previewing multiple files:

1) activate a different tab then preview, like version tab
2) click one time with the left mouse button (for selecting AND focus first file)
3) hold ctrl, and select other files, but only select outside of the filename, so it doesn't get focused (every time you click with ctrl on the file name it also gets focused)
4) now click on the preview tab
also, when you clicked once on the filename by mistake, so another file gets focused (that file begins previewing) then just ctrl click 2 times again on the first file that you want to start to play (one time to focus the file, a second time to also select it again), if the file is only focused but not selected, and you click on the preview tab, then the preview wil not activate and you have to press the space bar.

Now, the best and easiest option i can think of to make it perfect, is to always preview the first selected file, if there are other files getting selected, just let xyplorer select the next files, but keep playing the first file also when selecting by ctrl-clicking on the filenames, this works the right way with ctrl-clicking right outside of the filename but visually i find it more user friendly to be able to select the files by clicking on the file names.

And to solve the problem of the focused file, always letting the first selected file playing, whatever your selection is + kind of a shortcut key to just activate the previewing (and/or switching the tab from preview to another, and go back to preview to actually activate the preview again).

Pressing spacebar will start previewing the focused file, but when you select with ctrl, wich i use now as a work around, then most of the time the focused file is not a selected file so it shouldn't be previewed anyway.

I don't ask to change the way of selecting things if it breaks something of the usual way of xyplorer.

Now i think about it... maybe this is the solution with the focused thing!:
Wouldn't it be better, to make it possible to enable/disable focused file? and at default make it enabled, and a shortcut key to enable/disable it, and as a second solution, always preview the first selected file?.

hmm... but if you always letting play the first file it wouldn't be needed to disable focused... :?

I gues it's better to just letting play the first file is a good option..., and something to solve the problem if you select files with clicking on the filenames (because then the moment that you click a second filename, that file gets previewed, while the first file should be still previewing while selecting other files, like it happens when you ctrl-click outside of the filenames.

oops... sorry to type so much ;-). Anyway, this is not a complain, just saying some ideas to make the play next function better.

I love the play next function already

Greetings,

Steve

a lot has happened since i was here last - this is a great community! PN works beautifully. i'm glad we got to a point where everyone was happy with the result!

here is a brief observation that was a little unexpected to me. i had a folder on autonext and i needed to visit another folder to perform some other task, so i turned off "autoplay" thinking that the preview task would not be interrupted. but it seems xy would not retain the preview from the other tab. would it be possible for xy to create a separate instance of the preview for each tab? it would let the user perform other file management tasks while using the preview. an extreme example would use multiple instances of the previewer - in one tab you could be previewing audio files while previewing images in another tab. but more generally, if the preview window is "associated" with its parent tab, then the user can switch tabs and make selections in those tabs without disrupting any "in progress" previews.

thanks again for xy's great features! i owe you a beer!
