XY crashes when running installers

Re: XY crashes when running installers
Well, I've been observing this in various environments, right now I can only tell you from my private PC:
the message pops up after the elevation prompt, after I entered the password and confirmed it with OK.
At times, I may have gotten a different error message, but I could be wrong - might have been due to other locales (one company runs a Spanish windows) or due to other Windows looks (AERO whatever)
What happens then varies too: It always freezes, but sometimes this seems to last for an eternity, other times only a few seconds. In some cases another elevation prompt comes up (same one), so I do the whole thing twice.
Sometimes I have to terminate XY myself (by OK-ing the above dialog), sometimes it takes the TaskManager to shoot it down, other times a Windows message pops up telling me it encountered a problem and therefore had to shut down XY.

Re: XY crashes when running installers
Totally weird. Not the slightest idea what could cause this. I think the next logical question should be: Why only you? And it's even you in various environments, so it's not your system but *you*. This is equally weird.

Re: XY crashes when running installers
Wish I had an answer. It's exactly what I thought when it happened again and again. Figured it must have come up before, searched the forum, but none of the reported "hangs" or perceived glitches seemed to apply. Tried to reproduce them all, expecting to run into the same snag, but never did. Can't be related, then.
My only explanation: Most corporate users don't run XY as a guest, their company owns the license, their IT-department included it into their list of bona fide software. It got integrated into whatever tools they run in the background, it was granted the necessary rights up front, belonging to the right group, whereas I have to jump aboard in midair, while XY is up and running.
What's still puzzling, though: Why are none of my other file managers affected? I own quite a few and not one of them complains when it is asked for elevated rights.
And why does it happen on some private machines as well?
I thought I had narrowed it down when I could indeed reproduce it twice, on my Win7 and Vista after installing SuRun. Well, back to square one, gathering more evidence.

Re: XY crashes when running installers
Don't know if this helps: It also happens when I go to %recycler% via GoTo or AB
Accessing the recycle bin through any other means (Favs>SpecialSysFolders, TB Computer) works fine.

Re: XY crashes when running installers
At the moment neither nor ... this is driving me nuts
I emptied the bin a little while ago (were nice to have an option for that too, btw, in the XY list, I mean)
The only thing I could imagine - that I had stuff in there from - heck, I don't know - this laptop has only one user account, anyway.
But I am absolutely positive it did happen just an hour ago. I tried it several times - going there via Favorites| Special Folders, fine - going there via GoTo, crash - restarting, doing it again a bunch of times, always the same thing (I am not so sure about AB, I only tried that once)

Re: XY crashes when running installers
Gave it another shot: Deleted some stuff (within XY), then tried %recycler" - no crash, but an error message that says "Location is not available" - the trash can entry under the TB-Computer button is gone, too.
Needless to say, recycle bin can be opened without problems outside of XY.

Re: XY crashes when running installers
Just a shot into the dark. Please set this tweak and see if you still can crash it:
Code: Select all

Re: XY crashes when running installers
Nope. Same thing. I really appreciate your persistence and commitment, though.
When I type fresh; into the AB and run it, the fresh instance crashes as well. BUT it sports a recycle bin. Whereas the bin seems gone for good on my regular XY. Just as I was beginning to like it
with all the enhanced features you built into it. Oh well ....
I tried to roll back (before I set up my CTB that serves as a dropdown #123 command launcher - which is all I really changed around the time it happened) - but no matter what ini I load, the recycle bin cannot be lured out into the open from wherever it's hiding.

Re: XY crashes when running installers
The price you pay when you don't howl with the wolves
Most machines howl along nicely, though - it's just a few mavericks that stick out.
Flattering to ascribe it to my supernatural powers - but I can't be the only one. It's not t-h-a-t unusual that random hiccups stay undetected for a long time. Most users simply shrug them off.
I do admit, however, that I have a knack for running right into this sort of thing. Comes in handy in when I troubleshoot workflows for customers. Or when I get invited to parties and dinners. Hold it, everybody - goes the hostess - I lost my contact lenses/ wedding band/ xyz. 9 times out of 10 it's my plate where the lost object decided to hide.
Any ideas how to get back my recycle bin?
It was there after rebooting, came up in the right pane upon starting XY. I switch to the left pane, and call it via Favs - SpecialFolders > Rec bin ....
Poof - gone again.

Re: XY crashes when running installers
I have no idea how this could help, but maybe you can try with a copy of XYplorer (portable) from a different location?

What do you have in mind, Sammay?
Different user account? USB-stick? Machine? Launch-pad to trigger the exe?

Re: XY crashes when running installers
I thought maybe the <xydata> folder may have gotten corrupted, although as I said, I have no idea how that might cause this or how my suggestion might help.

In that case, you can try wearing a mask in front of the PC!I do admit, however, that I have a knack for running right into this sort of thing

And you were right on track, it seems. And some point I must have done something really stupid. Thinks are looking good at the moment, I started over with a fresh portable, gradually bringing in all my customizations. So far, the recycle bin is still there.SammaySarkar wrote:I thought maybe the <xydata> folder may have gotten corrupted
Is there a trick to load my customized toolbar? Similar to CC and UDC and CKS etc?
