ABPathNoSlash=1

Post by admin »

Did anybody test this tweak? I love it and will probably hardcode it in the next beta. Last chance to object...

What is it that you love about this?

Cannot say I see much advantage to the change but thus far my concern that it would cause me problems has not borne fruit.

Well, love is maybe a strong word, but it's simpler, smaller, clearer, and BTW also the standard (going by WE).

As long as the old behavior can be kept via tweak, I do not object. Personally, I'll keep it as it is.

Why would you stick to the old behavior? I checked a couple of screenshots from various file managers. None has the trailing slash.

The big one is to re-use the existing path in a new one.

AB: 'C:\XYplorer\'
Previously: Focus AB, hit End, type rest of the path.
Now: Focus AB, hit End, type '\', type rest of the path.

It also seems to be rather inconsistent right now in when it strips the slash.
Switching tabs seems to confuse XY into adding the slashes - typically after browsing a bit with the mouse in the list.
As does the use of DUAL.

EDIT: Note that that as I said I expected to find the new behavior annoying and except for the inconsistency it is proving not to be, so I don't yet object. ;)

I often will grab the contents of the address bar onto the clipboard and use that to paste into other programs, and in some cases where I have a File/Save As dialog, I will use paste to create a filename, and
instinctively I hit enter, but, because there was a trailing slash, the system would beep and fail to create my file, because there was no folder by that name.

Removing the slash solves that particular problem.

I love the tweak, thanks so much Don!

Confirmed, there's some gremlin behavior yet, the slash does come and go. If you recreate the "return of the slash" by swapping dual, then leave the affected tab in the same pane and return, the slash is again removed.

1) Confirmed, it needs a little fixing.
2) I might make it an option then (sigh)
3) :ball:

Sometimes I think things like this should be introduced silently as an enabled tweak by default.
That way you don't get our reaction to the change log but rather to the actual feature. ;)

And by silently I mean leave it out of the beta thread but ensure it gets added to the correct version in History.txt - as I feel that should still be the canonical source.

I think many users will see the change log and immediately get worried about how this will affect them and their habits and thus become defensive about keeping the "old way". Where if it was changed quietly they may not have noticed at all. (I'm guilty of this. )

My immediate concern was: I won't be able to distinguish between the folders and file names without extension in the MRU. Example: "C:\Downloads\Test". In this case, "Test" is a folder or a file? If I write in this way "C:\Downloads\Test\", it is pretty clear. (I use Auto-complete Path Name filter = Files and folders)

I am not sure if my concern is lifelike, but that was my first reaction.
