Tip: You can right-click the plus/minus icons in the tree

Post by admin »

I'm using this all the time since it was added in v13.50.0000. Maybe not everybody knows about it. It's a wonderful addition to the Mini Tree. :cup:

Been using it extensively on my laptop, but not on my home setup.
Wish I could, but on hi-res screens aiming at those eeny weeny +/- buttons is no fun, You give up pretty soon. No matter how large I zoom the fonts and whatever else, these tiny things stay as tiny as before. Any solution for that?

The target is 17x17 pixels. Not too bad IMO. I don't see a way to make it bigger without overlapping.

Well, you're doing a great job in targeting the wildest varieties of user minds, but less so in targeting nowadays computer hardware.

Get one of those monitors with 3000px plus, or get one of those sexy high-performance notebooks (Acer S7, Samsung Ativ, Lenovo Yoga Pro, or the ultra-hi-res range of Fujitsu LifeBooks) - then let me know if you get to even see those +/- icons, let alone target them with your mouse.

How about pulling out those icons in the open, and allowing users to replace them with bigger ones? Or providing a second set (applies to the other icons as well)

Or how about stealing innovative solutions from others (they did the same with you, I remember reading), see here:

Just like grindax says
You can easily emulate it yourself in real time: Ctrl-wheelmouse tree to blow up your entries, then step back to pretend you're looking at a 13" inch Samsung Ativ. Do you still see your icons or not?

People with real highdef screens, you can use the MS magnifier....

back to the topic, it's a nifty feature. But I only use this this when the mouse cursor is on/near the tree. Otherwise, the BC takes over for branch hopping.

Well, I meant with a camera. :)

So, which font size are we talking about?

Font size is a tricky thing with so many units and Zoom settings and Cleartype technology and all that jazz. Luckily, it's not relevant in our case - ICONS are the problem.

How do others handle it?
Some scale their +/- signs, the way Windows does it, probably using Marlett or a similar derivative.
Others simply provide larger sets of icons, usually 32x32, 48x48, 64x64. Take your pick, each one is better than the 17x17 now, which seems more like 10x10 to me, but maybe that's my resolution again, which makes them look even tinier than they really are.

That IS neat. :appl: Thanks for pointing it out.
And I like that I can use my scroll wheel here. I had been using the breadcrumb down arrow even though the scroll wheel doesn't work there.

I get the list with a triangle arrow at the top and bottom. Clicking on them moves the list up or down.

Right-click the BC and choose Custom Menu or Colored Menu...
