Maybe for you but not for me -- i want to see Cat all the time so that I know exactly where to move mouse to.
admin wrote:So if something like "Tree | Cat | List" or "Cat | Tree | List" is not interesting I'll stop this thing. It's too much work anyway.
I believe those would be helpful/beneficial in the interim for 16x9 users to make better use of that extra horiz area but it seems there are at least 3-4 users who think Tree / List / Cat would be the best layout (assuming no auto-hide)
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

admin wrote:No, I just never thought of this (overlooked it in your other mail). One day I will add it, but not now. This stuff is a lot of work -- due to some stupid decisions made many years ago. I should rewrite the whole layout thing, but that would be even more work :).
Well, I will give it shot. See ya back... :ugeek: :cup:

Maybe for the sake of consistency, instead of auto-hiding, add that little-white-arrow-on-blue-background-icon, which you already have on the Info-Panel to the Catalog-Panel (and if possible to the Tree-Panel), to toggle its visibility?

Making progress with the layout. It's looking good. 90% it will happen, including stored layouts (just like Column Layouts)!

The auto-hide thing is a different story. That might come later. Actually I'm already having something better in mind. Cannot talk about it now. Kangaroos have long ears... ;)

:ninja: Since you're already working on the layout side, can I interest you in this? f=5&t=11735

Stored Layouts - that sounds very good indeed.
Opens the way to script new workflows, such as swapping the catalog side together with the active pane - to save mouse travel and better visual orientation.

Judging from what Don is saying, both SessionManager by FluxTorpedoe and Layout Manager by Filehero may need some heavy tweaking after this version.

Hi Ken,

thanks for reminding me of LM. :D

Seriously, I do surely hope that I can move it to the attic once native Layouts are supported. And I don't see any reason why this shouldn't happen (the basic logic is simple).

Hi Filehero, I'm not sure how far Don's planning on going with layout support, at least initially. He may be just thinking tree, cat, and list, and not all the other bars that your Layout Manager and Flux's Session Manager support. Many scripts have been rendered "no longer needed" after XYplorer changes. We'll just have to wait and see. Take care.

Still undecided. What is a layout?

1) Which elements are visible?
2) How big are they?
3) How are the elements arranged?
4) All of it?

I tend to say "All of it".

All of it. Except "content", in terms of actual locations and paths. In this respect other approaches like Session Manager will not become obsolete. At least that's the way other programs handle their layout. Flexible enough to fit any kind of content, the layout just providing the framework, the lattice into which content (favorites, tabsets etc) can be fitted.

Yeah, I tend to agree. Which elements, their size and their arrangement. To give you an example I set up various mini script to adjust the current elements toolbars, menu and panels depending on what I'm doing, in dual pane moving files, viewing thumbnail or pictures, or normal configuration. Nav Panel, Toolbar, Menu bar, Tab bar, Address bar, Breadcrumb, Status Bar, Info Panel, Dual Pane, and Catalog are all adjusted on or off depending on the mode I'm in. I agree with Stef123 though the "content" can be controlled in other ways. As long as we can still control through "get" if a particular menu or toolbar is bar on or off then we can control those aspects of the layout and this would apply to any new panes developed. Size and arrangement control would be a nice feature.

As soon as possible. But it's a lot of work. I'm really cleaning the Augean stables here. There is even dust from the last millenium. :ninja:
