I have a second wish. I would like items in the tree pane to have more vertical space between them. xyplorer has them closer together vertically than Windows explorer or xplorer2. I guess this is intentional to fit more in but I do not like it. I have a 20 inch widescreen LCD 1680 by 1050 which I think has the smallest dot pitch of all the LCDs so I guess this makes it worse for me. Increasing the font size is not the answer (but Ctrl-mousewheel is nice to have though). I wonder how much work to make the vertical space between tree items configurable.
I have a second second wish - if I want to backup a folder to a network drive several times a day, I have to browse to the folders or whatever every time. It would be useful if backup operations could be remembered so I can repeat one that I previously did. I guess this would come with scripting. I know there's other ways to do this but xyplorer is a file manager. An automated backup mechanism with selectable interval would be cool too.
p.s. I tried out xplorer2 coz of the xy tree pane being cramped but unfortunately it doesn't have locked tabs or single click favourites like xy category pane and its help file is too big and complex with a useless index.

On first item: I've got my XY set to use "MS Sans Serif - Reg - 8pt" and I can't see any visual difference 'tween it and Win Expl on vertical spacing...(one pixel at most, if there is any)...I'm on a 1024x768 LCD laptop...I had to try a few different combinations before I found one that I liked...at least XY allows one to set font...many pgms don't! Do you use exact same font as Win Expl and still see them too close together?
On second item: I've mentioned before here that I use (and personally suggest) an alternate product for many backup situations...and that is SyncBack (the free vers) by 2BrightSparks...Given that XY is a file manager, I tend to use it mainly as such, and use another tool for backups...that's not to say that having a slightly better ability in XY would be a bad thing, just don't want it to become too bloated...
What I DO wonder about is that one has to select the actual files to "backed" up...instead of being able to just select the folder in Catalog and then using "Backup to" in toolbar...any simple reason why not?

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Re: Second wish: tree pane is too cramped
Seems there's only a difference of one pixel there, for me at least. Yes, XY only have 2 pixels between folders, while Explorer has 3. But I gotta say I like that, just like the fact that MyComputer is on top on the Tree, cause it means more info visible on one screenalpha wrote:I would like items in the tree pane to have more vertical space between them. xyplorer has them closer together vertically than Windows explorer or xplorer2.
Yeah, and scripting is somewhere on Don's listalpha wrote:I have a second second wish - if I want to backup a folder to a network drive several times a day, I have to browse to the folders or whatever every time. This should also all be different and easier when Drop Stacks are implemented, but what you can already do is add you folder on the Catalog, then to backup it you can use the clipboard, right-click on its Catalog item and chose Copy. You can then paste it anywhere, including on another Catalog item
BTW, maybe Catalog items should have the "Paste Special" submenu aswell!

On my system Windows explorer has minimum of 5 pixels of whitespace between folder icons against xyplorer 2. I would post an image comparing them but it seems attachments don't work in this forum. With WinXP I have XP theme and not "Windows classic" so I can't select the font (and don't want to) and I have "large fonts" selected. Don't forget that 2 pixels on your monitor may not the same physical size as two pixels on someone elses.
xplorer2 has a great feature of letting you assign a shortcut key for a particular layout/ folder collection but unfortunately I think its interface is ugly, so I'm still looking for a file manager

Anyways, everyone have their own tastes & screens yeah, I for one am perfectly happy with my 2 pixels on XY
XY's Tree already has a narrow option (View/Tree Style) that reduces the tree level indent from 19 to 10 pixels to save a lot of horizontal space if you work in deeply nested folders, maybe an option could be added for you there... only it'll work the other way around
Regarding font selection though, I don't see how what theme you used affect this, it's an XY option: through menu View/Font you can define pretty much all fonts used everywhere in XY, including the one used in Tree/List.

On those rare times when I need to show an image here, I upload my screen print JPG (created by Gadwin Print Screen which is a quite handy freeware screen capture utility) to my PhotoBucket acct and then use its "generate HTML" option to create the URL code for a clickable thumbnail...I think ImageShack is another possibility...alpha wrote:I would post an image comparing them but it seems attachments don't work in this forum.
